Malaysian passport holders can visit Greece for tourism or business for up to 90 days within any 180-day period without a visa. This applies to the entire Schengen Area, so your 90-day allowance covers all 27 Schengen countries combined. As of 2026, entry requirements remain straightforward, but you must meet a few key conditions at the border.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your departure date from the Schengen area
Your passport needs at least 3 months of validity remaining after your planned exit from Greece (and the entire Schengen zone). Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration at Athens International Airport routinely asks for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Budget airlines flying into Greece also check this before issuing a boarding pass.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers may ask for a hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a letter from a host. Have a printed or digital copy ready — showing a booking on your phone works fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statement or cash
You may be asked to show you have at least €50 per day of your stay. A recent bank statement, credit card, or a mix of cash and cards covers this requirement.Recommended
Schengen 90/180 rule applies
Your 90-day visa-free allowance is for the entire Schengen Area, not just Greece. If you've already spent time in France, Italy, or any other Schengen country in the previous 180 days, those days count against your 90-day limit. Keep a running tally.
Entry may be refused without explanation
Even with a valid passport and visa-free status, Greek border officers can deny entry if they suspect you might overstay, work illegally, or cannot support yourself financially. Always carry proof of accommodation, return ticket, and sufficient funds.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Greek border control
At Athens International Airport (Eleftherios Venizelos) or any other Greek port of entry, join the 'All Passports' queue. Have your passport, boarding pass, and return ticket ready. The officer will check your passport validity, stamp it, and ask a few questions (purpose of visit, where you're staying). Answer clearly and briefly.
2
Present your documents
Hand over your passport and any requested supporting documents. If asked, show your accommodation booking and return ticket. The officer may also ask about your travel insurance — have the policy number or a digital copy handy.
3
Receive entry stamp
The officer stamps your passport with the date of entry and the number of days allowed (usually 90). Check the stamp before walking away — if the date is wrong, ask for a correction immediately.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After clearing immigration, proceed to baggage claim, then customs (green channel for most tourists). You're now free to enter Greece.

Frequently asked questions

No. The 90-day visa-free limit applies to the entire Schengen Area. You cannot extend it from within Greece. If you want to stay longer, you must apply for a national visa (type D) from the Greek embassy in Malaysia before travelling.
No, if you stay airside (don't pass through passport control) and your connecting flight is within 24 hours. But if you need to enter Greece (e.g., to switch airports or stay overnight), you'll need to meet the same visa-free conditions as any other traveller.
You will be denied boarding by the airline or entry by Greek border police. Renew your passport before travelling. There are no exceptions for Malaysian passport holders.
Not strictly mandatory at the border, but it's highly recommended. If you need medical care, a hospital stay can cost €500–€1,000 per day. Some airlines may also ask for proof of insurance before boarding.
No. The visa-free entry is for tourism, business meetings, or short-term visits. Remote work for a foreign employer is technically not allowed. Greece has a separate Digital Nomad Visa for that — you'd need to apply in advance.
Overstaying is a violation of Schengen rules. You may face a fine (up to €3,000), a ban from re-entering the Schengen Area for up to 3 years, and deportation. Always track your days carefully.
No, for stays under 90 days. Hotels handle registration automatically. If you're staying in a private residence, the host should register you with the local police within 48 hours — but this is their responsibility, not yours.
