Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your departure date from the Schengen area
Your passport needs at least 3 months of validity remaining after your planned exit from Hungary. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration officers at Budapest Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they check this before stamping you in.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation letter
Keep your hotel confirmation or host's invitation handy — border officers sometimes ask where you're staying. A simple booking printout or email works fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statement or cash showing you can support yourself
Carry a recent bank statement or enough cash/card limit to cover your stay — roughly €50–€100 per day. Officers rarely ask, but if they do, a quick bank app screenshot satisfies them.Recommended
90-day Schengen limit applies across all 27 countries
Your 90-day visa-free stay is for the entire Schengen Area, not just Hungary. Days spent in France, Germany, Italy, etc. all count toward the same 90-day limit. Use the Schengen calculator (EU website) to track your days.
Hungary uses the euro? No — it's Hungarian Forint (HUF)
Hungary is not in the eurozone. The currency is the Hungarian Forint (HUF). ATMs are widely available. Credit cards are accepted in most hotels and restaurants, but cash is still king at smaller shops and markets.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Budapest Airport (BUD) or land border
At Budapest Airport, follow signs to 'Non-EU Passports'. Join the queue for passport control. Have your passport, boarding pass, and return ticket ready. The officer will check your passport, ask about your trip (purpose, length, where staying), and stamp your passport. Typical wait: 5-15 minutes. At land borders from Austria/Slovakia, the process is similar but often faster.
2
Present documents at passport control
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask: 'How long are you staying?', 'Where are you staying?', 'What's the purpose of your visit?'. Answer briefly and honestly. If asked, show your return ticket and accommodation booking. They'll stamp your passport with the entry date. That stamp sets your 90-day clock.
3
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, proceed to baggage claim (if you checked bags), then walk through the green 'Nothing to Declare' channel if you have no goods to declare. Customs checks are random. You're now legally in Hungary.

Frequently asked questions

No. The 90-day visa-free entry is for tourism, business meetings, and short visits. Remote work for a foreign employer is technically not allowed. If you need to work remotely, consider a digital nomad visa (Hungary offers one for non-EU citizens, but it requires a separate application).
No. The visa-free stay cannot be extended. You must leave the Schengen area before day 90. Overstaying can result in fines, a ban, or difficulty entering Schengen countries in the future.
No. Hungary is part of the Schengen Area. Once you enter Hungary, you can travel freely to other Schengen countries (e.g., Austria, Czech Republic, Poland) for up to 90 days total. But your 90-day clock runs across the entire Schengen zone, not just Hungary.
You need a national visa or residence permit. Apply at the Hungarian embassy in Malaysia before you travel. Options include work visa, student visa, or family reunification. Processing takes 30-60 days.
Not strictly required for visa-free entry, but strongly recommended. If you're asked and can't show it, you might be denied entry. More importantly, medical costs in Hungary can be high — a hospital stay can cost hundreds of euros per day.
You'll be fined (typically €50-200 depending on the length of overstay), and you may be banned from re-entering the Schengen area for up to 5 years. Always track your days carefully.
Yes. As a Malaysian passport holder, you can enter Hungary from any Schengen country by land without a visa. The same 90-day rule applies. Border checks are rare but possible — always carry your passport.
