Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Japan does not require 6 months of passport validity beyond your departure date — it only needs to be valid for the entire stay. Airlines sometimes enforce the 6-month rule anyway, so check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Japan
Immigration officers ask for a return or onward ticket at arrival. Enforcement varies by officer — some check strictly, others skip it. Have a printed or digital copy of your outbound flight ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Officers rarely ask for it, but having a hotel confirmation or a letter from your host avoids delays. Keep a copy on your phone or printed.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Not routinely checked, but if asked, show a bank statement or credit card with enough for your stay. No set minimum amount — just enough to cover accommodation, food, and transport.Recommended

Overstaying is serious
If you stay beyond 90 days, you'll be fined, detained, and banned from re-entering Japan for up to 5 years. Set a reminder to leave on time.

What happens at the border

1
Arrival at the airport
After landing at Narita, Haneda, Kansai, or any other international airport, follow signs to 'Arrivals' and then 'Foreign Passports'. You'll join the queue for non-residents.
2
Submit arrival card
Fill out the paper arrival card (usually handed out on the plane) or use the Visit Japan Web QR code. The card asks for your flight number, hotel address, and duration of stay.
3
Present your passport and documents
Hand over your passport, arrival card, and any supporting documents (return ticket, hotel confirmation) if asked. The officer will take your photo and fingerprints (both index fingers).
4
Receive entry permission
The officer stamps your passport with a 'Temporary Visitor' status and a departure date. You're free to enter Japan. Keep the stamped card (if given) with your passport until you leave.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free stay is strictly 90 days and cannot be extended. If you overstay, you face fines, detention, and a ban from re-entering Japan for up to 5 years. Plan your trip within the 90-day limit.
Not usually. Immigration officers rarely ask for bank statements or cash. But if you look like you might work illegally or have no means of support, they can ask. Having a credit card and a return ticket is usually enough.
Visit Japan Web is a free online service (https://vjw-lp.digital.go.jp) where you pre-register your arrival details, customs declaration, and immigration info. It's optional but recommended — it lets you skip the paper forms and use a QR code at the airport, saving 15-30 minutes in queues.
No. The visa-free entry is for tourism, business meetings, or short visits only. You cannot work (paid or unpaid) or enroll in a course longer than 90 days. For work or study, you need the appropriate visa.
The airline may deny you boarding. If you somehow get through, immigration can refuse entry and send you back on the next flight. Always have a confirmed onward ticket before you fly.
If you stay airside (don't pass immigration) and your layover is under 24 hours, you don't need a visa. If you want to leave the airport, you must qualify for visa-free entry (Malaysians do) and go through immigration. For a short layover, you can enter visa-free for up to 90 days.
You will likely be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry by Japanese immigration. The 6-month validity rule is strictly enforced. Renew your passport before traveling.
