Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to be in New Zealand. No specific minimum validity beyond your stay is required, but airlines often enforce a 6-month rule — check with your carrier before departure.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for entry
Immigration officers at Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return or onward ticket ready — they may deny boarding if you don't have one.Required
Proof of accommodation
Recommended to have on hand
Officers may ask where you're staying, especially if you're arriving without a pre-booked itinerary. Have a hotel booking or a letter of invitation from a host ready to show.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended to show you can support yourself
You should be able to show at least NZD 1,000 per month of your stay, or NZD 400 if your accommodation is prepaid. A recent bank statement or credit card statement works fine.Recommended
Apply well in advance
Visa processing can take 4 weeks or more. Don't book non-refundable flights until your visa is approved.
eVisa is digital
Your visa will be sent as a PDF. Save it on your phone and print a backup. You don't need a physical sticker in your passport.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for a visitor visa online
Go to the Immigration New Zealand website and create an account. Fill out the visitor visa application form, upload your passport scan, photo, bank statements, flight itinerary, and accommodation booking. Pay the fee (around NZD 246 for a standard visitor visa). Submit and wait for a decision — typically 2–4 weeks.
2
Receive your visa and prepare documents
Once approved, you'll get an eVisa linked to your passport number. Print a copy or save it on your phone. Also print or save your return ticket, accommodation confirmation, and travel insurance policy.
3
Arrive at New Zealand immigration
At the airport (Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington, or Queenstown), join the 'Visitors' queue. Hand over your passport. The officer may ask about your travel plans, accommodation, and funds. Answer clearly. They'll stamp your passport with the entry date and allowed stay (usually up to 3 months).
