Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply before travel
Apply for an Egypt eVisa at visa2egypt.gov.eg before departure. Processing takes 3–5 business days, so apply at least a week ahead. Print the approved eVisa and carry it with your passport.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months
Your Nigerian passport must have at least 6 months of validity beyond your intended departure date from Egypt. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for entry
Immigration officers at Cairo Airport routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or a ticket to your next destination ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host in Egypt. Immigration may ask where you are staying, especially if you arrive without a pre-booked hotel.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can cover your stay
Have bank statements or cash equivalent to at least $1,000 USD ready. Officers rarely ask, but if they do, you need to show you can support yourself during your visit.Recommended
No visa on arrival for Nigerian passport holders
You cannot get a visa on arrival at Cairo airport. You must apply for an e-Visa online before you travel. Arriving without an approved visa means you'll be sent back on the next flight.
Passport validity counts from entry date
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you land in Egypt, not from your departure date. If your passport expires in less than 6 months after your arrival, renew it before applying for the visa.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for e-Visa Online
Go to visa2egypt.gov.eg, fill in your details, upload a passport photo and a copy of your passport bio page, and pay the fee. Processing takes 2–5 business days. You'll receive the approved visa by email — print it or save it on your phone.
2
Prepare Your Documents
Before you leave for the airport, gather: your printed e-Visa, passport (valid 6+ months), return ticket confirmation, and first-night hotel booking. Keep them in your carry-on.
3
Arrival at Cairo International Airport
Follow signs to 'Passport Control' (not 'Visa on Arrival' — that's for other nationalities). Join the queue for foreign passports. Hand over your passport and e-Visa. The officer will check your documents, may ask for your return ticket and hotel address, then stamp you in. The whole process takes 5–15 minutes if you have everything ready.
4
Collect Luggage and Exit
After clearing immigration, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. There's usually a green channel for nothing to declare. Exit into the arrivals hall.

Frequently asked questions

No. Nigerian passport holders cannot get a visa on arrival for Egypt. You must apply for an e-Visa online before you travel. The visa on arrival option is only available for certain nationalities, and Nigeria is not on that list.
Processing usually takes 2 to 5 business days. Apply at least a week before your flight to be safe. You'll receive the approved visa by email. If you haven't heard back after 5 days, check your spam folder or contact the visa portal support.
The standard single-entry e-Visa costs around $25 USD (approximately 20,000 NGN at current rates). The fee is paid online during the application. Double-check the exact amount on visa2egypt.gov.eg as fees can change.
You will be denied entry. Egypt requires your passport to be valid for at least 6 months from your date of arrival. If your passport is close to expiring, renew it before applying for the e-Visa.
If you're transiting and not leaving the airport, you generally don't need a return ticket. But if you plan to enter Egypt (even for a short layover), you'll need a confirmed onward or return ticket. Immigration may ask to see it.
The standard e-Visa allows a stay of up to 30 days. Extensions are possible but not guaranteed. You would need to visit the Passport Administration Office in Cairo or another major city before your visa expires. The process can take a few days and costs around 1,000 EGP. It's easier to apply for a longer visa upfront if you know you'll stay longer.
Keep these in your carry-on: your passport, the printed or digital e-Visa approval, your return flight booking confirmation, and your first-night hotel booking confirmation. Having them ready speeds up the queue and avoids any issues at the counter.
