What happens at the border

1
Apply for your UK visa online

4
Travel to the UK
Fly into any UK airport (Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, etc.). At border control, join the 'Non-EEA' queue. Have your passport, return ticket, accommodation proof, and bank statements ready. The officer may ask about your plans — answer honestly and briefly.

Frequently asked questions

Standard processing is 3 weeks, but can stretch to 8 weeks during peak seasons (summer, Christmas). Priority processing (5 working days) costs about £500 extra. Super priority (next working day) costs about £800 extra — both available at Lagos and Abuja centres.
No. Standard Visitor visas are not extendable. You must leave before your visa expires. If you need to stay longer, you'd need to apply for a different visa type (e.g., a long-term visit visa or a work visa) from outside the UK.
Yes, if you're Nigerian and need to pass through UK border control (e.g., switching airports or staying overnight). If you stay airside and don't pass immigration, you may not need a visa — but check the 'Transit Without Visa' scheme on gov.uk. Most Nigerians will need a Direct Airside Transit Visa (DATV) for airside transit.
You can reapply, but you'll need to address the reason for refusal (e.g., insufficient funds, unclear travel plans). There's no formal appeal for visitor visas. Common reasons: not proving ties to Nigeria (job, family, property) or submitting incomplete documents. Consider using a registered immigration adviser.
No. You cannot take paid or unpaid work, study for more than 30 days, or marry. For work or longer study, you need a specific visa (e.g., Skilled Worker, Student visa).
There's no fixed amount, but a good rule is £100 to £150 per day of your stay. For a 10-day trip, show at least £1,000 to £1,500 in your bank account. Include recent payslips and a letter from your employer confirming your leave.
No, the UK does not require yellow fever vaccination for entry. However, if you're travelling from a country with yellow fever (Nigeria is one), you may be asked for proof of vaccination when re-entering Nigeria. Always carry your yellow card for your return.
