Passport validity

Proof of onward travel
Immigration officers at Maputo airport routinely ask for proof of a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight itinerary ready. Without it, you may be refused entry.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Have a hotel reservation or an invitation letter from your host ready. Officers occasionally ask for this at the border, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Financial means
Carry proof of sufficient funds for your stay — a bank statement or credit card showing at least $500 USD equivalent. Immigration may ask to see it if you look underprepared.Recommended
Cash only for visa on arrival
The visa fee must be paid in cash — US dollars or Mozambican metical. No credit cards, no mobile money. Bring small denominations to avoid problems with change.
Yellow fever vaccine required
Mozambique requires a yellow fever vaccination certificate if you're arriving from Nigeria. Carry your WHO yellow card. Without it, you may be vaccinated at the airport or denied entry.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Maputo International Airport
After deplaning, follow signs to 'Immigration' or 'Visa on Arrival'. At Maputo (MPM), the visa counter is before the main passport control booths. Join the queue for 'Visa on Arrival' — it's clearly marked.
2
Present your documents and pay the fee
Hand over your passport, return ticket (screenshot is fine), and accommodation booking. The officer will process your visa. Payment is in cash — US dollars or Mozambican metical. As of 2026, the fee is around $50 USD. Keep small bills handy.
3
Receive your visa and proceed to passport control
The officer stamps the visa into your passport. Then you walk to the main passport control queue, show your passport with the fresh visa, and get your entry stamp. That's it — you're in.
