eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization)An eTA is an electronic entry permit linked to your passport. You need it to board a flight to Canada.
Required before boarding
Apply online at the official eTA website (https://eta.cic.gc.ca/). The fee is CAD $7 and processing is usually minutes, but can take a few days if extra documents are requested. You must obtain this before your flight to Canada.Required
Passport validityYour passport must not expire soon after your trip. Canada requires it to be valid for 6 months beyond your arrival.
At least 6 months beyond your stay
Your Dutch passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry into Canada. Ensure it meets this before you travel.Required

At least 1 blank page
Your passport must have at least 1 blank page for entry stamps. Check that you have a free page before you go.Required
Return or onward ticketEven if not mandatory, having a return ticket can help show you plan to leave Canada before your stay ends.
Not required, but recommended
No official requirement for a return or onward ticket is listed for Dutch citizens entering Canada. However, border officers may ask for proof of your intended departure. It is wise to carry a copy of your travel itinerary.Recommended
Proof of fundsHaving proof of funds helps demonstrate you can support yourself during your visit.
Not required, but recommended
No specific amount is required for Dutch citizens. However, you should be able to show you have enough money for your stay if asked by a border officer. Carry bank statements or credit cards as evidence.Recommended
Arrival declarationYou don't need to fill out any form before you travel, but you will declare goods at the border.

No visitor visa option for Dutch passport holders
Unlike many other nationalities, Dutch citizens cannot apply for a visitor visa (TRV) for Canada. You must use the eTA system instead. Don't book flights until your eTA is approved.
Processing times vary by season
During peak travel months (May–September), eTA processing can take longer. Apply at least 8–10 weeks before your planned departure to avoid delays.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the eTA online
Go to the official IRCC eTA website and fill out the application form. You'll need your passport, a valid email address, and a credit or debit card to pay the CAD 7 fee. Approval is usually granted within minutes, but can take a few days if additional documents are requested.
2
Receive your eTA approval
Once approved, you'll receive an email confirmation. The eTA is electronically linked to your passport, so no physical document is needed. Check that the details are correct and that your passport number matches.
3
Book your travel and prepare documents
After you get the eTA, book your flight and accommodation. Print or save digital copies of your eTA confirmation, passport, return ticket, hotel booking, and insurance. Keep them in your carry-on.
4
Arrive at a Canadian airport
When you land at Toronto Pearson, Vancouver, or Montreal, go to the primary inspection kiosk. A border officer will ask about your trip purpose, how long you're staying, and where you'll be. Show your documents if asked. They may stamp your passport with a visitor record.
