As a Dutch passport holder, you need a visitor visa (TRV) to enter Canada in 2026. There is no visa-free access or eTA option for tourism or business visits — you must apply and get approved before you travel.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa application
Apply for a visitor visa
You need a visitor visa before traveling to Canada. Apply online through the IRCC portal — processing times vary from a few weeks to several months depending on your country of residence. Submit your application well ahead of your planned travel date.Apply for visaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Dutch passport must be valid for the entire time you plan to be in Canada. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required, but airlines may check for at least one blank page for the entry stamp.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Canada
Immigration officers routinely ask for proof that you will leave Canada before your visa expires. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or onward ticket ready — they may deny boarding if you cannot show one.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation, Airbnb receipt, or a letter from your host with their address and contact details. Officers may ask where you are staying, especially if you are a first-time visitor.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have bank statements, a credit card, or traveller's cheques showing you have enough money for your stay. There is no fixed minimum, but expect to show at least CAD $1,000–$2,000 for a short trip.Recommended
No eTA option for Dutch passport holders
Unlike many other nationalities, Dutch citizens cannot use the eTA system for Canada. You must apply for a full visitor visa (TRV) before travel. Don't book flights until your visa is approved.
Processing times vary by season
During peak travel months (May–September), visa processing can take longer. Apply at least 8–10 weeks before your planned departure to avoid delays.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the visitor visa online
Go to the IRCC website and create an account. Fill out the application form, upload your documents (passport scan, photo, travel history, proof of funds, itinerary), and pay the CAD 100 fee. Processing takes 2–4 weeks on average.
2
Wait for approval and submit your passport
Once approved, you'll get a letter asking you to send your physical passport to the visa office in The Hague or a VAC. They'll affix the visa sticker. This takes another 1–2 weeks.
3
Book your travel and prepare documents
After you get the visa, book your flight and accommodation. Print or save digital copies of your visa, passport, return ticket, hotel booking, and insurance. Keep them in your carry-on.
4
Arrive at a Canadian airport
When you land at Toronto Pearson, Vancouver, or Montreal, go to the primary inspection kiosk. A border officer will ask about your trip purpose, how long you're staying, and where you'll be. Show your documents if asked. They may stamp your passport with a visitor record.

You'll receive a letter explaining the reason — often insufficient ties to the Netherlands, unclear travel purpose, or lack of funds. You can reapply with stronger documents, but there's no formal appeal process.
No. A visitor visa only allows tourism, visiting family, or short business meetings. You cannot take a job or enroll in a course longer than 6 months. For work or study, you need a separate permit.
If you're connecting between two international flights and staying airside, you may not need a visa. But if you need to clear customs or leave the airport, you'll need a transit visa or a visitor visa. Check with your airline.
