Dutch passport holders can visit the United Kingdom for up to 180 days without a visa. This hasn't changed since the UK left the EU. In 2026, you still just need your passport and a return ticket.

Apply for United Kingdom eVisaRequired for most visa-exempt visitors since 2024-2025. Not a visa — approval is linked electronically to your passport. Apply before you travel.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)You need to apply and get approval before you travel; it's linked to your passport.
Required for visa-free travel
Dutch passport holders must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (evisa) before travelling to the United Kingdom. Apply online via the official UK government portal. The evisa is not a visa but a pre-travel authorisation.Required
Passport validityCheck your passport expiry date – it must not expire within 6 months of your arrival.
At least 6 months from arrival
Your Dutch passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended date of arrival in the United Kingdom.Required
Blank passport pagesBorder officials need a clean page to stamp your passport.
At least 1 blank page
Your passport must have at least 1 blank page for entry stamps. Ensure no pages are damaged or missing.Required
Return or onward ticketHaving a booked ticket helps prove you intend to leave the UK.
May be requested at border
Although not always required, be prepared to show proof of a return or onward journey if asked by a border officer. This is not a mandatory document for all travellers.Recommended
Proof of fundsCarry bank statements or credit cards to show you can support yourself.
May be requested at border
You may be asked to demonstrate that you have sufficient funds for your stay. No specific amount is set, but you should be able to cover accommodation, living costs, and return travel.Recommended
Arrival declarationYou don't need to fill out any arrival form before landing.
Not required
No arrival declaration is required for entry into the United Kingdom from the Netherlands. Not required
eGates are your friend
Dutch passports work in UK eGates at most major airports. No need to queue for a human officer — just scan and go. If the eGate rejects you (rare), join the regular queue.
Overstaying is serious
The 180-day limit is strict. Overstaying by even a day can lead to a 12-month ban from the UK. Set a calendar reminder to leave before day 180.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at UK border control
At airports like Heathrow, Gatwick, or Manchester, follow signs to 'UK Border' or 'Arrivals'. There are separate eGates for EU passports (including Dutch) at most major airports. Use the eGate if available — it's faster and you don't need to speak to an officer.
2
Present your passport at the eGate or desk
At the eGate, scan your passport photo page, look at the camera, and the gate opens. If you're directed to a manned booth, hand over your passport and any supporting documents if asked. Answer questions honestly — 'tourism', 'visiting friends', or 'business meetings' are all fine.
3
Receive your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry. Check the stamp before walking away — it should show the correct date. If you used an eGate, you won't get a stamp, but your entry is still recorded electronically.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After border control, head to baggage claim, then through customs. Green channel for most tourists (nothing to declare). Red channel if you have goods over the duty-free limit.

Frequently asked questions

No. The 180-day visa-free stay is for tourism, business meetings, study up to 6 months, and short family visits. You cannot take a job, work as a freelancer for UK clients, or do paid work without a work visa.
Yes. Since January 8, 2025, all visa-free travellers, including Dutch passport holders, must have an ETA to enter the UK. Apply online at gov.uk/apply-uk-visa — the £10 fee covers multiple trips over 2 years. Most applications are approved within minutes, but apply at least 48 hours before departure.
No. The visa-free period cannot be extended. If you want to stay longer, you need to apply for a visa before you travel (e.g., a Standard Visitor visa for up to 6 months, or a long-term visit visa). Overstaying can result in a ban.
You must leave before your passport expires. The 6-month validity rule applies on entry, but if your passport runs out during your stay, you lose your valid travel document. Contact your embassy (Dutch Embassy in London) for an emergency passport.
Not routinely, but an officer can ask. If asked, show bank statements, credit card, or cash. A good rule: have enough to cover your stay without working — roughly £100 per day for accommodation and expenses.
Yes, but you'll still pass through UK border control at the port or airport of entry. The Common Travel Area (UK, Ireland, Isle of Man, Channel Islands) has no internal border checks, but you must have a valid passport and meet UK entry requirements.
You'll be given a written refusal notice explaining why. Common reasons: no return ticket, insufficient funds, or suspicion of working illegally. You can appeal, but it's easier to fix the issue before you travel. If refused, you'll be returned to your departure point.
