As a Dutch passport holder, you can travel to Norway visa-free for tourism or business for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This has been the case since Norway joined the Schengen Area, and it remains unchanged in 2026. Just make sure your passport meets the validity requirements before you go.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for entire stay in Norway
Your passport needs to be valid for the full duration of your stay in Norway. As a Schengen member, Norway enforces the 90/180-day rule — you can stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period across all Schengen countries, not per country.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen area
Immigration officers at Oslo Gardermoen and other Norwegian ports routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a return ticket or a ticket to a non-Schengen destination ready — they check this before stamping you in.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Officers may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. Have a hotel confirmation or a letter from your host with their address and phone number ready.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during stay
Norway is expensive — immigration expects you to have at least 500 NOK (roughly €45) per day of your stay. A bank statement or credit card with available limit works fine.Recommended
Schengen area rules apply
Norway is part of the Schengen Area but not the EU. Your 90-day visa-free stay counts across all Schengen countries combined. If you've already spent 30 days in France, you only have 60 days left for Norway.
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Norwegian border control will deny entry if your passport has less than 6 months validity from your entry date. Check your passport now — if it's close, renew before booking flights.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before departure
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date) and ensure you have at least 1 blank page. Book your return/onward ticket and first night accommodation. Save screenshots of both on your phone. If you want insurance or an eSIM, arrange those now.
2
Arrive at Oslo Gardermoen or other Norwegian airport
When you land, follow signs to 'Passport Control' (even though it's Schengen, Norway is not in the EU but is in Schengen). For Dutch passport holders, this is usually a quick check — the officer will look at your passport, may ask your purpose and length of stay, and stamp your entry. Have your return ticket and accommodation proof ready just in case.
3
Collect your luggage and exit
After passport control, proceed to baggage claim, then through customs. Norway has a 'green' (nothing to declare) and 'red' (goods to declare) channel. If you have nothing to declare, use the green channel.

Frequently asked questions

You can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period for tourism or business. This is the standard Schengen rule. If you want to stay longer, you'll need to apply for a residence permit from the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) before your 90 days expire.
Yes, you can work remotely for a non-Norwegian employer without a visa, as long as you don't provide services to a Norwegian company. If you plan to work for a Norwegian employer, you need a work permit.
You will be denied entry. Renew your passport before you travel. The 6-month validity is strictly enforced at Norwegian border control.
If you stay less than 90 days, no registration is needed. If you stay longer than 90 days (with a permit), you must register with the police or the UDI within the first 3 months.
No, the 90-day stay cannot be extended for tourism. If you need to stay longer due to an emergency (e.g., medical), you must apply to the UDI before your 90 days are up. Overstaying can result in fines or a re-entry ban.
You must carry your passport or a valid ID at all times. Norwegian police can ask for identification. A copy of your passport is not sufficient — keep the original with you.
No, there is no visa on arrival because you don't need a visa at all. You enter visa-free as a Schengen national. Just show your valid passport at border control.
