Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover entire stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the full duration of your 30-day stay. Airlines check this at check-in, and Mozambican immigration enforces it strictly.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure
Immigration officers at Maputo International Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Carry a hotel reservation or a letter from your host in Mozambique. Officers occasionally ask for it, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have a bank statement or cash equivalent to roughly $500 USD for your stay. Immigration may ask to see it if you look under-resourced.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you arrive. If it's less, you'll be turned away at the border — no exceptions.
No visa needed, but have proof of onward travel
Immigration officers often ask for a return or onward ticket. Keep a screenshot on your phone. A bus ticket to South Africa works too.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare documents before departure
Print or save to your phone: passport (check validity), return ticket, first night accommodation booking, and travel insurance. Have them easily accessible.
2
Arrive at Maputo or Beira airport
At immigration, join the 'Foreign Passports' queue. Hand over your passport. The officer may ask for your return ticket and accommodation. Answer clearly. They'll stamp you in for up to 30 days.
3
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, collect your bags from the carousel. Then proceed to customs (green channel if nothing to declare). You're in.
