Norwegian passport holders can enter Austria without a visa for short stays. As of 2026, you can travel freely within the Schengen Area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months from your entry date.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Norwegian passport needs to be valid for your entire stay in Austria. Schengen rules do not require 6 months of validity beyond departure, but your airline may enforce it — check with them before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration at Vienna and other Schengen entry points routinely asks for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking out of the Schengen zone ready — they check this at passport control.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers may ask where you are staying. Have a hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a letter from your host ready. I have been asked for this at Vienna Airport on a random check.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during the stay
Austria can ask you to prove you have enough money for your trip. Have a bank statement or credit card showing available funds — around €100 per day of stay is a safe benchmark. I have never been asked, but it is in the rules.Recommended
Schengen rules apply
Austria is part of the Schengen Area. Your 90-day limit counts across all Schengen countries. Use the Schengen calculator to track your days.
Entry may be refused
Even without a visa, border officers can refuse entry if they suspect you won't leave, lack funds, or have a criminal record. Always carry proof of your return ticket and accommodation.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at the border
At Vienna International Airport or any other Austrian entry point, join the queue for non-EU/EEA passport holders. Have your passport ready.
2
Present your documents
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask for your return ticket, accommodation booking, or proof of funds. Answer clearly and briefly.
3
Get your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date. This stamp records the start of your 90-day Schengen stay. Keep it safe.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After the passport check, proceed to baggage claim and then through customs. You're free to enter Austria.
