Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay
Your passport needs at least 6 months of validity beyond your intended departure date from Brazil. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Brazil
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket out of Brazil. A flight reservation or booked ticket showing you leave within 90 days is enough — they rarely check the exact date, but they want to see you're not planning to overstay.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have your first night's hotel confirmation or a letter from your host ready. Officers rarely ask for it, but if you arrive without any address, they may pull you aside for extra questions.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Brazil doesn't publish a fixed minimum, but carrying a credit card and a bank statement showing a few thousand reais equivalent (around $500–$1,000 USD) covers you. I've never been asked, but a friend was once quizzed on how he'd pay for a month-long trip.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Airlines check this before you board. If your passport has less than 6 months validity from your entry date, you will be denied boarding. No exceptions.
Keep your return ticket handy
Immigration officers frequently ask to see proof of onward travel. A screenshot on your phone is fine — just have it ready before you reach the counter.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before departure
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date). Book your return/onward ticket and first night accommodation. Save screenshots of both on your phone. Consider getting travel insurance and a local eSIM.
2
Arrive at a Brazilian airport
You'll land at Guarulhos (GRU) in São Paulo, Galeão (GIG) in Rio, or another international airport. Follow signs to 'Passport Control' or 'Immigration'.
3
Queue at immigration
Join the line for 'Foreign Passports' (not Mercosul or Brazilian citizens). Wait times vary — 15 minutes to 1 hour depending on flight volume.
4
Present your passport and answer questions
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask: 'How long are you staying?', 'Where are you staying?', 'What's the purpose of your visit?'. Answer briefly and honestly. They may also ask to see your return ticket.
5
Get your entry stamp
The officer stamps your passport with the date of entry and the allowed stay (usually 90 days). Check the stamp before walking away. If the dates look wrong, ask for correction immediately.
6
Collect luggage and proceed to customs
After passport control, pick up your bags from the carousel. Then go through customs (green lane for nothing to declare, red lane if you have goods to declare). You're in Brazil.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free stay is strictly 90 days and cannot be extended. If you want to stay longer, you must leave Brazil before day 90 and re-enter. Overstaying can result in fines and future entry bans.
You will likely be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry by Brazilian immigration. Renew your passport before traveling. The 6-month validity is counted from your date of entry, not your departure.
No. If you're transiting through a Brazilian airport and staying airside (not passing through immigration), you don't need a visa. But if you plan to leave the airport or stay overnight, you'll need to enter under the visa-free rules.
You'll be fined approximately R$100 per day overstayed (around 20 USD). Pay the fine at the Federal Police before leaving. Overstaying can also affect future visa-free entries.
Officially, no. The visa-free entry is for tourism only. However, many digital nomads do remote work without issues. If you plan to work for a Brazilian company, you need a work visa. For occasional remote work for a foreign employer, it's a grey area — most people do it quietly.
No. Brazil does not require an online arrival declaration for Norwegian passport holders. Just show up with your passport and return ticket.
Report the loss immediately to the local police (get a police report). Then contact the Norwegian embassy or consulate in Brasília, Rio de Janeiro, or São Paulo to apply for an emergency passport. This can take 1-3 days.
