Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to be in Colombia. Airlines check this at check-in, and immigration officers in Bogotá and Medellín enforce it strictly.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Colombia
Immigration at El Dorado Airport routinely asks for a return or onward ticket before letting you through. Have a printed or digital copy of your outbound flight ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Officers sometimes ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. A hotel confirmation or a letter from your host covers this.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
You may be asked to demonstrate access to funds, roughly 200 USD per day of your trip. A bank statement or credit card works fine.Recommended
Check-Mig pre-registrationColombia's mandatory online pre-registration form at migracioncolombia.gov.co. Complete it within 72 hours before your flight — it takes under 5 minutes.
Mandatory online form within 72 hours of departure
Complete the free Check-Mig form at migracioncolombia.gov.co between 72 and 1 hour before your flight. Save the confirmation QR code — you'll show it at check-in and again at immigration in Colombia.Open Check-Mig formRequired
Check-Mig is mandatory — don't skip it
Complete the Check-Mig form at migracioncolombia.gov.co 1-5 days before your flight. It's free, takes 5 minutes, and you'll need the confirmation at immigration. Without it, you risk a fine or denial of entry.
Travel insurance is strongly recommended
While not required for entry, medical costs in Colombia can be high. A basic travel insurance policy covers emergencies and hospital stays. It's cheap peace of mind.

What happens at the border

1
Complete Check-Mig Online
Go to migracioncolombia.gov.co and fill out the Check-Mig form 1-5 days before your flight. You'll need your flight details, passport info, and first night's accommodation. Save the confirmation PDF or screenshot it.
2
Prepare Documents for Immigration
Have your passport, Check-Mig confirmation, return ticket, and accommodation booking ready. Keep them in a clear folder or on your phone's lock screen for quick access.
3
Arrive at Immigration Counter
At Bogotá El Dorado or Medellín airports, follow signs to 'Extranjeros' (Foreigners). Hand over your passport and Check-Mig confirmation. The officer will ask your purpose of visit and length of stay. Answer clearly. They'll stamp your passport with up to 90 days.
4
Collect Luggage and Exit
After the stamp, proceed to baggage claim and customs. There's usually a green/red channel — green means nothing to declare. Keep your passport handy for random checks.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free entry is not extendable. You must leave before 90 days. If you want to stay longer, you'd need to apply for a visa at a Colombian consulate before your trip, or leave and re-enter after a short absence (though re-entry rules can be strict).
Overstaying is a violation. You'll be fined when you leave (around 2-3 USD per day over, but can vary). More seriously, it can affect future visa applications. Avoid it.
Not required for entry from Norway, but recommended if you plan to visit Amazon regions or national parks. Some border crossings may ask for proof. The vaccine is free at some Colombian health centers if you need it on arrival.
No. Airlines will likely deny boarding. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your entry date. Renew your passport before traveling.
Yes. It's a legal requirement. If you don't complete it, you may be fined or denied entry. It's free and takes 5 minutes online. Do it 1-5 days before your flight.
If you're transiting and don't leave the international zone, you don't need a visa. But if you plan to leave the airport (even for a few hours), you must go through immigration and follow the same visa-free rules (90 days max).
Technically, the visa-free entry is for tourism or business (meetings, conferences). Remote work for a foreign employer is a gray area. Many digital nomads do it, but officially you'd need a work visa. For short stays, it's rarely enforced, but be discreet.
