Norway passport holders need a visa to visit Canada in 2026. You must apply for a visitor visa (TRV) before you travel — there is no visa waiver or eTA option for Norwegian citizens. Plan ahead, as processing can take several weeks.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Norwegian passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to be in Canada. Canada does not require 6 months of validity beyond your departure date, but airlines sometimes enforce it — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Visitor visa application
Apply for a Canadian visitor visa before travel
Norwegians need a visitor visa to enter Canada. Apply online through the IRCC portal at least 4–6 weeks before your trip — processing times vary. You'll submit your passport, photos, financial documents, and travel itinerary as part of the application.Apply for visitor visaRequired
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Canada
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket at the border. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking showing you leave Canada before your visa expires.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel bookings or host invitation
Carry your hotel confirmations or a letter of invitation from your host. Officers may ask where you're staying for the first few nights, especially if you're arriving without a fixed itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Have bank statements or a credit card statement showing you have enough money for your trip. There's no fixed minimum, but CAD $1,000–$2,000 per month is a safe benchmark for a tourist visit.Recommended
Apply early — processing takes weeks
Canadian visa processing for Norwegian applicants typically takes 2–6 weeks. Don't book non-refundable flights until you have the visa in hand. Biometrics appointments in Oslo can fill up fast — book as soon as you get the instruction letter.
No visa-free entry for Norwegians
Unlike many European countries, Norway is not part of Canada's visa waiver program. You cannot use an eTA. A full visitor visa (TRV) is mandatory for all purposes: tourism, family visits, or business meetings.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Gather your passport, bank statements, travel itinerary, accommodation bookings, and any invitation letters. Scan everything as PDFs or JPEGs — the online portal accepts these formats.
2
Submit the online application
Go to the IRCC website and create an account. Fill out the visitor visa form (IMM 5257), upload your documents, and pay the CAD $100 application fee (plus CAD $85 biometrics fee). Processing takes 2–6 weeks on average.
3
Give biometrics
After you apply, IRCC will send a Biometrics Instruction Letter. Book an appointment at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) — in Norway, that's in Oslo. Bring your passport and the letter. They'll take your fingerprints and photo. Cost: CAD $85.
4
Wait for a decision
IRCC reviews your application. You can check status online. If approved, they'll ask you to send your passport for the visa sticker. Use the VAC's courier service — it takes about 1–2 weeks.
5
Travel to Canada
At the border (e.g., Toronto Pearson or Vancouver International), present your passport with the visa sticker, your return ticket, and proof of funds. The border officer may ask about your plans — answer honestly. They'll stamp your passport with a visitor record valid for up to 6 months.
