Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your departure date from Malaysia
Your passport needs at least two blank pages for entry and exit stamps. Airlines at Oslo and other Norwegian departure points will check this before letting you board. If your passport expires sooner, renew it before traveling.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Malaysia within 90 days
Immigration at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and other entry points routinely asks for a confirmed onward ticket. A bus, train, or flight ticket to any destination outside Malaysia works — it just needs to be within your visa-free stay. Budget airlines are especially strict about checking this at check-in.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation letter
Have a printed or digital copy of your first night's hotel reservation or a letter from your host in Malaysia. Immigration officers occasionally ask for it, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. A simple Booking.com confirmation works fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient cash or bank statement for your stay
Carry at least 500 USD (or equivalent in MYR/EUR) in cash or have a bank statement showing available funds. Immigration rarely checks this for Norwegian passport holders, but having it ready avoids delays. ATMs are widely available in Malaysia.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date you enter Malaysia. Airlines check this before boarding, and immigration checks on arrival. If your passport expires sooner, you will be denied entry — no exceptions.
Onward ticket is mandatory
Malaysian immigration requires proof of onward travel out of the country. A return flight, bus ticket, or ferry booking all count. Keep a screenshot on your phone — you may be asked to show it at the counter.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare documents before travel
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date), print or screenshot your onward ticket and first night hotel booking. Save them in a phone folder or email for quick access.
2
Arrive at Malaysian immigration
At Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) or other entry points, join the foreign passport queue. Have your passport, boarding pass, and onward ticket ready. The officer will stamp you in for up to 90 days.
3
Receive entry stamp and check duration
The immigration officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry and the allowed stay. Verify the stamp says 90 days or less. If it shows fewer days than expected, ask politely for clarification.
4
Exit immigration and collect luggage
After the stamp, proceed to baggage claim and customs. No arrival declaration form is needed for Norwegian passport holders. You're free to enter Malaysia.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free entry is not extendable. You must leave Malaysia before the 90 days are up. If you need to stay longer, you would need to apply for a different visa type (e.g., social visit pass) before your current stay expires, but overstaying can result in fines or a ban.
Overstaying in Malaysia is taken seriously. You'll be fined RM 30 per day (about USD 7) for each day overstayed, and you may be detained, banned from re-entry, or both. Always leave before your stamp expires.
No, Norwegian passport holders do not need a visa for transit through any Malaysian airport, even if you stay overnight. You can remain in the international transit area without passing immigration. If you want to leave the airport, you'll need the standard visa-free entry (up to 90 days).
No. The visa-free entry is strictly for tourism, business meetings, or social visits. Any paid work, volunteering, or study requires a proper work permit or student visa. If you're caught working without the right visa, you risk deportation and a ban.
Not routinely for Norwegian passport holders, but immigration officers can ask. It's wise to have a credit card or bank statement showing you can support yourself (roughly USD 100 per day of stay). Most travellers are never asked.
You will be denied boarding by the airline and refused entry by Malaysian immigration. There are no exceptions. Renew your passport before travel.
No, Malaysia does not require an arrival declaration form for Norwegian passport holders. You simply go through immigration with your passport and onward ticket.
