What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before departure
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date) and that you have at least 1 blank page. Book your return/onward ticket and first night accommodation. Save screenshots of your flight booking and hotel confirmation on your phone.
2
Fill out the Vietnam arrival form (if required)
Some airlines or airports may ask for a Vietnam arrival declaration form. You can fill this out online before flying or get a paper copy on the plane. It's straightforward — name, passport number, flight, hotel address.
3
Arrive at a Vietnamese international airport
You'll land at one of Vietnam's international airports: Noi Bai (Hanoi), Tan Son Nhat (Ho Chi Minh City), Da Nang, Cam Ranh (Nha Trang), or Phu Quoc. Follow signs to 'Immigration' or 'Passport Control'.
4
Present your passport at immigration
Hand over your passport to the officer. They may ask for your return ticket or hotel booking. Answer clearly. The officer will stamp your passport with a 45-day visa-free entry. This usually takes 1–2 minutes.
5
Collect your luggage and exit
After clearing immigration, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. You're free to enter Vietnam. Keep your passport handy — you'll need it for hotel check-ins and domestic flights.

Frequently asked questions

No. The 45-day visa-free entry is not extendable. If you want to stay longer, you must leave Vietnam (a 'visa run' to a neighboring country like Cambodia or Thailand) and re-enter, or apply for a visa before you travel.
You can apply for a tourist visa (e-visa or visa on arrival) before you travel. An e-visa costs $25 USD and allows up to 90 days, single or multiple entry. Apply online at the official Vietnam e-visa portal at least 3 business days before your trip.
Yes. Immigration officers may ask for proof of onward travel. A flight booking out of Vietnam (to any country) within the 45-day period is sufficient. A screenshot or printed itinerary works.
You will likely be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry at immigration. Renew your passport before traveling. There are no exceptions for Norwegian citizens.
Yes. Norwegian passport holders can use the 45-day visa-free entry at any international land border crossing (e.g., from Cambodia at Moc Bai, or from Laos at Lao Bao). The same rules apply — passport validity, return ticket, and blank page.
No mandatory online form for visa-free entry. Some airlines may ask for a Vietnam arrival declaration, but it's not required by immigration. You can fill out a paper form on the plane if needed.
Not required for entry, but strongly recommended. Medical costs in Vietnam can be high — a hospital stay for something like dengue fever can cost hundreds of dollars per day. Insurance covers that.
