New Zealand passport holders need an eVisa to visit Myanmar. It covers tourism and business visits, and you must apply online before you travel. Since 2026, the eVisa is the standard entry method for short-term stays.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply before travel
Apply for a Myanmar eVisa at the official Ministry of Immigration portal. The eVisa costs around $50 USD and is valid for 90 days from issue, allowing a single entry for up to 28 days. Processing takes 3–5 working days — apply at least a week before your flight.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must have 6 months validity
Your New Zealand passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure date from Myanmar. Airlines check this at check-in and will deny boarding if your passport expires sooner.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for entry
Immigration officers at Yangon and Mandalay airports routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or a ticket to your next destination ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Carry a printed hotel confirmation or an invitation letter from your host in Myanmar. Immigration may ask for your accommodation address on arrival, and some airlines request it at check-in.Recommended
Proof of funds
Cash or bank statement
Have at least $300 USD in cash or a bank statement showing sufficient funds. Myanmar is a cash-heavy country — bring crisp US dollars (no tears, no marks) for visa fees and expenses.Recommended
eVisa is mandatory — no visa on arrival for NZ passport holders
New Zealand passport holders cannot get a visa on arrival in Myanmar. You must have an approved eVisa before you fly. Apply at least a week in advance.
Keep digital copies of everything
Save your eVisa PDF, flight tickets, and accommodation confirmations on your phone. Also email them to yourself. If you lose your printed copies, you can still access them.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the eVisa online
Go to the official Myanmar eVisa website (evisa.moip.gov.mm). Fill in your personal and passport details, upload a passport-style photo, and pay the fee. Processing usually takes 3–5 working days.
2
Receive and print your eVisa
Once approved, you'll get an email with your eVisa PDF. Print a copy and also save it on your phone. You'll need to show it at check-in and on arrival.
3
Prepare your documents for departure
Before you leave, gather your passport, eVisa printout, return ticket, and accommodation booking. Keep them in your carry-on for easy access.
4
Arrive at Yangon or Mandalay International Airport
Most flights land at Yangon International Airport (RGN) or Mandalay International Airport (MDL). Follow signs to immigration. Present your passport, eVisa, and return ticket. The officer will stamp your passport and you're in.
5
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, collect your bags from the carousel. There are no customs declarations for personal items. You can then head to the arrivals hall where taxis and hotel shuttles are available.

Frequently asked questions

Processing usually takes 3–5 working days. Apply at least a week before your trip to be safe. The fee is around USD 50 for a tourist eVisa.
No, the eVisa is not extendable. You must leave before it expires. If you need to stay longer, you'd need to apply for a different visa type before travel.
If you're transiting and not leaving the airport, you generally don't need a visa. But check with your airline — some may require one. For any land transit or overnight stay, you'll need an eVisa.
You won't be allowed to board your flight. Airlines check for valid visas before departure. If you somehow arrive without one, you'll be refused entry and sent back on the next flight.
No, the eVisa is single-entry only. If you leave Myanmar and want to return, you need to apply for a new eVisa.
Your passport (valid 6+ months), the printed eVisa, a return or onward ticket, and proof of accommodation for your first night. Immigration may ask for any of these, so have them ready.
It's not officially required for the eVisa, but it's strongly recommended. Medical facilities are limited and costs can be high. A basic policy covers hospital stays, evacuation, and trip cancellation.
