Peruvian passport holders need an approved eVisa (Electronic Travel Authority) before flying to Australia. This is a quick online process, not a visa on arrival. As of 2026, you must have your ETA approved before you board your flight.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
ETA (subclass 601) applicationETA (Australia): Electronic Travel Authority — a digital visa linked to your passport. Required for all eligible passport holders. Apply via the Australian ETA app ($20 AUD fee) before travel.
Electronic Travel Authority
Download the Australian ETA app from the App Store or Google Play — do not use third-party websites that charge extra fees. The app costs $20 AUD and approval usually comes through in seconds. Your ETA is linked electronically to your passport and allows multiple visits for up to 12 months per entry.Apply for ETARequired
Valid passport
Original passport
Your passport must be valid for the entire duration of your stay in Australia. Australian immigration does not require 6 months validity beyond departure, but your airline may enforce it — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Australian border officers routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or onward ticket ready at immigration.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Immigration may ask where you are staying. Have your hotel confirmation, hostel booking, or a letter from your host ready to show.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statements or cash
Carry bank statements or a credit card showing you can support yourself during your stay. Australian officers rarely ask for a specific amount, but having evidence of funds avoids delays.Recommended
ETA is linked to your passport
Your ETA is electronically linked to your passport number. If you renew your passport, you must apply for a new ETA with the new passport details.
No visa on arrival for Peruvians
You cannot get an Australian visa at the airport. You must have an approved ETA before you board your flight. Airlines check this before letting you check in.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the ETA online
Go to the Australian Department of Home Affairs website (immi.homeaffairs.gov.au) and apply for an Electronic Travel Authority (subclass 601). The process is entirely online — no embassy visit needed. You'll need your passport details and a credit card for the fee (around AUD 20). Approval is usually instant or within a few hours.
2
Receive your ETA approval
You'll get an email confirming your ETA is granted. Save a copy on your phone or print it. The ETA is linked electronically to your passport, so you don't need to show the email at immigration, but it's good to have it handy.
3
Arrive at an Australian airport
When you land at Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, or any other international airport, head to the ePassport gates if your passport has the chip symbol. Otherwise, join the queue for a human officer. Have your passport and return ticket ready. The officer may ask about your plans — just answer honestly.
4
Receive entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry. That's it — you're in. The ETA allows multiple visits for up to 3 months each, for tourism or business purposes.

Frequently asked questions

Most ETAs are approved within minutes to a few hours. Apply at least 48 hours before your flight to be safe. The fee is about AUD 20 (around USD 13).
No, the ETA does not allow extensions. If you want to stay longer, you need to apply for a different visa (like a Visitor Visa subclass 600) before your ETA expires. Overstaying can lead to bans.
It's not a formal requirement for the ETA, but an officer may ask how you'll support yourself. Having a credit card or a few hundred dollars in cash is enough. No specific amount is required.
No. The ETA is strictly for tourism, visiting family, or short business activities like meetings. You cannot work or study for more than 3 months. If you want to work, you need a work visa.
Denials are rare for Peruvian citizens with clean records. If denied, you'll get a reason. You can reapply with corrected information or apply for a Visitor Visa (subclass 600) instead, which takes longer but has more flexibility.
Yes, if you leave the airport transit area. If you stay airside (don't go through immigration), you don't need a visa. But if you want to leave the airport during a layover, you need an ETA or a transit visa.
No. Australian immigration strictly requires 6 months of validity from your entry date. If your passport expires sooner, renew it before applying for the ETA.
