Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your departure date from Iran. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Iran
Immigration officers at Imam Khomeini and Mehrabad airports routinely ask for a confirmed onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or a ticket to your next destination ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host. Officers occasionally ask where you are staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can cover your stay
Have access to at least $500 USD in cash or a credit card. Iran is largely a cash economy — bring euros or US dollars to exchange at official bureaus. ATMs rarely work for foreign cards.Recommended
Women must wear a headscarf in public
All women, including foreign tourists, must cover their hair with a headscarf and wear loose-fitting clothing that covers arms and legs. This is strictly enforced. Bring a scarf in your carry-on — you'll need it before leaving the airport.
Currency and cash
International credit/debit cards do not work in Iran due to sanctions. Bring enough euros or US dollars in cash to exchange. You can exchange at banks, exchange offices, or hotels. The official currency is the Iranian rial (IRR), but many prices are quoted in 'toman' (1 toman = 10 rials).
Alcohol and pork are illegal
Possession or consumption of alcohol is strictly prohibited and can lead to arrest, fines, or deportation. Pork products are also banned. Do not bring any alcohol or pork items in your luggage.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at an international airport
Fly into Imam Khomeini International Airport (IKA) in Tehran, or other major airports like Shiraz, Isfahan, or Mashhad. Visa-free entry is only available at airports, not land borders.
2
Queue at immigration
Follow signs to 'Foreign Passports' or 'Visa on Arrival' counters. There's usually a separate queue for visa-free arrivals. Have your passport, return ticket, and hotel booking ready.
3
Get your passport stamped
The officer will check your documents, take a photo, and stamp your passport. You'll get 15 days from the date of entry. No fee is charged for visa-free entry.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. Declare any large amounts of currency or restricted items.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free entry is not extendable. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a regular tourist visa before travel. Overstaying can result in fines and future entry bans.
No, the visa-free policy only applies at international airports. Land borders (e.g., from Turkey, Armenia, or Iraq) require a pre-arranged visa. You can get a visa on arrival at some land crossings, but it's not guaranteed and may involve extra fees.
You will be denied boarding by the airline and refused entry by Iranian immigration. Renew your passport before travel. The 6 months are counted from your entry date, not your departure.
If you're transiting through an Iranian airport and not leaving the transit zone, you do not need a visa. But if you plan to leave the airport or stay overnight, you'll need the visa-free entry or a transit visa.
No, the visa-free entry is strictly for tourism and business meetings. Working, studying, or any paid activity is prohibited. You'd need a proper work or student visa.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You'll be fined approximately 30,000 Iranian rials per day (about $0.70 USD), but more importantly, you may be banned from re-entering Iran for a period. Always leave on time.
No, the visa-free entry does not require police registration. However, if you stay in a private home, the host must register you with the local police within 24 hours. Hotels handle this automatically.
