Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply before travel
Apply for a Myanmar eVisa at the official Ministry of Immigration portal. Processing takes 3–5 working days, and you'll receive an approval letter by email. Print two copies — one for immigration at Yangon/Mandalay/Naypyidaw airport and one for your hotel.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
6 months validity required
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure date from Myanmar. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Immigration officers at Yangon and Mandalay airports routinely ask for a confirmed onward ticket. A bus or train ticket out of Myanmar works, but a flight booking is the safest bet. If you're overlanding to Thailand, have a printed bus e-ticket ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Have your hotel confirmation or a letter from your host ready. Immigration may ask for the first night's booking at minimum. If you're staying with friends, a scanned invitation letter with their Myanmar ID number helps.Recommended
Proof of funds
Cash or card for your stay
Carry at least $200 USD equivalent in cash (kyat or USD) per day of your stay. ATMs in Yangon and Mandalay work but often run out of cash. Immigration rarely asks, but having cash visible in your wallet avoids delays.Recommended
ATMs are unreliable
ATMs in Myanmar often run out of cash, especially outside Yangon and Mandalay. Carry enough USD or kyat in cash for your entire stay. Credit cards are accepted only at upscale hotels and restaurants.
Travel insurance with evacuation coverage is strongly advised
Medical facilities in Myanmar are limited. Serious conditions may require evacuation to Thailand or Singapore. Make sure your insurance covers medical evacuation.
eVisa is the easiest option
The eVisa costs $50 (single entry) or $70 (multiple entry) and is processed online. No need to visit an embassy.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for your eVisa online
Go to evisa.moip.gov.mm, fill in your details, upload a passport photo and a scan of your passport bio page. Pay the $50 fee (single entry) or $70 (multiple entry) by credit card. You'll get an email confirmation within minutes.
2
Wait for approval (3–5 working days)
Most eVisa applications are processed within 3 working days, but allow up to 5. Check your spam folder. Once approved, you'll receive a PDF approval letter. Print two copies.
3
Arrive at Yangon, Mandalay, or Naypyidaw airport
The eVisa is only valid for entry at these three international airports. At immigration, present your passport, printed eVisa approval letter, and return ticket. The officer will stamp you in for 28 days.
4
Extend your stay (if needed)
If you want to stay longer, visit the Myanmar Immigration Department in Yangon (No. 1, Thiri Mingalar Lane, Insein Road, Hlaing Township) or the Mandalay Immigration Office. Bring your passport, two passport photos, and the extension fee ($3 per day, max $300). Processing takes 1–2 days.
