Passport validity requirements

Proof of onward travel
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking ready. Without it, you may be refused entry at the border.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Carry a confirmed hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your Iranian host. Immigration may ask for it during entry questioning. A printed copy works best.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient financial means
Have at least $500 USD in cash or a credit card statement showing available funds. Iran is a cash-heavy economy — bring US dollars or euros to exchange at official bureaus.Recommended
Passport stamps from Israel
If your passport contains any Israeli stamps, visas, or entry/exit stamps from border crossings with Israel, your Iran visa application will be automatically rejected. Get a new passport before applying.
Women travellers
Women must wear a headscarf (hijab) in public at all times, including at the airport upon arrival. Loose-fitting clothing that covers arms and legs is also required. Pack accordingly.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for e-visa online
Go to e-visa.ir, create an account, fill in the application form, upload a passport photo and a scan of your passport data page. Pay the visa fee (around €50-80 depending on nationality and processing time). Wait for approval — typically 7-14 days. You'll receive a visa approval code by email.
2
Print or save visa approval
Once approved, print the visa approval letter or save a clear copy on your phone. You'll need to show it at the airline check-in counter and again at Iranian immigration.
3
Arrive at Iranian airport
At Imam Khomeini International Airport (IKA) in Tehran or other international airports, follow signs to 'Foreigners' or 'Visa' after passport control. Present your passport, visa approval, return ticket, and hotel booking. An immigration officer may ask a few questions about your itinerary. They will stamp your passport with a visa sticker.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After clearing immigration, collect your checked luggage from the carousel, then proceed through customs. There are no additional visa steps after this.
