Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply before travel
Apply for a Kenya eVisa at the official eTA portal. Processing takes 2–3 business days, so apply at least a week before departure. The eVisa is single-entry and valid for 90 days from issue.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must have 6 months validity beyond your stay
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry into Kenya. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket at Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Have a printed copy or a screenshot of your booking ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a confirmed hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host in Kenya. Immigration may ask for it, especially if you are staying at a private residence.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Carry bank statements or a credit card showing access to at least $500 USD for the duration of your stay. Immigration officers occasionally ask for this at entry.Recommended
Yellow fever certificate required
If you're arriving from Pakistan or any country with yellow fever, you must show a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate. Without it, you may be quarantined or denied entry. Get vaccinated at least 10 days before travel.
e-Visa is not a guarantee of entry
Having an approved e-Visa does not guarantee you'll be let in. The immigration officer at the port of entry makes the final decision. Have all your documents ready and be prepared to answer questions about your trip.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for e-Visa online
Go to the official Kenya e-Visa website (etakenya.go.ke). Fill out the application, upload your passport scan and photo, and pay the fee (around $51 USD for a single-entry tourist visa). Processing usually takes 2-5 business days.
2
Print your e-Visa approval
Once approved, you'll receive an e-Visa document by email. Print a copy and save a PDF on your phone. You'll need to show it at check-in and on arrival.
3
Arrive at JKIA (Nairobi) or Moi International (Mombasa)
At immigration, join the 'Visitors' queue. Have your passport, e-Visa printout, return ticket, and accommodation proof ready. The officer will stamp you in — usually for up to 90 days.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After clearing immigration, pick up your bags from the carousel. You may be asked to show your customs declaration form (if you have goods to declare). Then you're free to exit.
