Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport

Japan does not require 6 months of passport validity beyond your departure date — your passport just needs to be valid for the full duration of your stay. Airlines may still enforce the 6-month rule, so check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket

Immigration officers at Narita, Haneda, and Kansai sometimes ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return ticket ready. Enforcement varies by officer, so don't risk arriving without one.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel bookings or host invitation
Carry printed or digital copies of your hotel confirmations or a letter of invitation from your host. Immigration rarely asks, but having it ready avoids delays if they do.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statements or cash
Have access to at least ¥100,000 (roughly $700 USD) for shorter stays, or enough to cover your entire trip. Immigration rarely checks, but budget airlines sometimes ask at check-in.Recommended

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free stay is strictly 90 days and cannot be extended. If you want to stay longer, you need to apply for a proper visa (like a tourist visa or working holiday visa) before you travel. Overstaying can result in fines, detention, and a ban from re-entering Japan.
If you're staying in the international transit area and not passing through immigration, you don't need a visa. But if you want to leave the airport (even for a few hours), you'll need to enter Japan visa-free — which is fine as long as you meet the requirements (valid passport, onward ticket).
You'll be denied boarding by the airline. Even if you somehow get to Japan, immigration will refuse entry. Renew your passport before you travel.
No. The 6-month validity rule is strictly enforced for visa-free entry. If your passport has less than 6 months left, you need to renew it first.
Not usually. Immigration officers rarely ask for proof of funds for Polish passport holders. But it's smart to have a credit card or bank statement handy if you're asked — just in case.
No, it's optional. But it saves time at immigration because you pre-submit your customs declaration and passport info. If you don't use it, you'll fill out a paper form on arrival — which takes a few extra minutes.
Technically, no. The visa-free status is for tourism, business meetings, and short visits — not for remote work. In practice, many digital nomads do it quietly, but if immigration finds out you're working (e.g., through social media or a tip-off), you could be deported. Japan has a specific 'Digital Nomad Visa' for longer stays — check if that applies to you.
