Polish passport holders can travel to Sweden visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This has been the case since Sweden joined the Schengen Area, and it remains unchanged in 2026. You just need a valid passport and proof of onward travel.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay
Your Polish passport only needs to be valid for the duration of your stay in Sweden. Sweden does not require 6 months of remaining validity for EU/EEA nationals. Airlines rarely check this, but carry your passport — border officers at Arlanda will scan it.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen area
Immigration at Stockholm Arlanda and other Swedish airports routinely asks for a return or onward ticket. This can be a flight, train, or ferry ticket out of the Schengen zone. A bus ticket to Copenhagen works too — just show you're leaving within 90 days.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Swedish border officers rarely ask for this, but having a hotel confirmation or a friend's address handy helps if you get pulled aside. Print it or save it on your phone — either is fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
No set amount is published for Sweden, but carrying a credit card and a bank statement showing a few thousand SEK covers you. I've never been asked, but a friend was once quizzed at Arlanda about how he'd pay for a month-long trip.Recommended
Schengen 90/180 Rule
Your 90-day visa-free stay applies to the entire Schengen Area, not just Sweden. Days spent in France, Germany, Italy, etc., all count toward your 90-day limit. Use the Schengen calculator to track your days.
Passport Validity is Critical
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your entry date. If it expires sooner, you will be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry at the border. Renew your passport well in advance.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare Documents Before Travel
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry). Book your return/onward ticket and first night accommodation. Save screenshots of your flight booking, hotel confirmation, and travel insurance on your phone.
2
Arrive at Swedish Border Control
At Arlanda (Stockholm), Landvetter (Gothenburg), or any other Swedish airport, join the 'Non-EU' queue. Have your passport and boarding pass ready. The officer will check your passport, ask about the purpose and length of your stay, and may ask for proof of onward travel.
3
Get Your Passport Stamped
The border officer will stamp your passport with the entry date. This stamp is your proof of legal entry and starts your 90-day Schengen clock. Keep the stamp visible — don't cover it with other documents.
4
Collect Luggage and Exit
After passport control, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. There are no additional checks for most travellers. You're free to enter Sweden.

Frequently asked questions

You can stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This is the standard Schengen rule. The 90 days reset only after you leave the Schengen Area for 90 consecutive days.
No, you don't need a visa for tourism or short business trips. But if you plan to work for a Swedish employer or stay longer than 90 days, you need a work permit or residence permit. Remote work for a non-Swedish company is generally allowed under the visa-free rules.
Overstaying is a violation of Schengen rules. You may be fined, banned from re-entering the Schengen Area for up to 5 years, or both. If you need to stay longer, apply for a residence permit before your 90 days expire.
No, the visa-free stay cannot be extended. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a residence permit from the Swedish Migration Agency before your 90 days are up. This is a separate process and takes weeks to months.
No, for stays under 90 days you don't need to register. If you stay longer than 90 days (with a permit), you must register with the Swedish Tax Agency for a personal identity number.
You should renew your passport at the nearest Polish embassy or consulate before it expires. Travel with an expired passport is not allowed. Contact the embassy in Stockholm for an appointment.
Yes, there are no border checks between Schengen countries. You can drive or take a train from Denmark (via the Øresund Bridge) or from Germany (via ferry to Trelleborg or Ystad). Keep your passport handy — random checks do happen.
