Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover your entire stay in Tajikistan
Your passport needs to be valid for the full duration of your stay. Tajikistan does not enforce a strict 6-month validity rule, but your airline may ask for at least 3 months beyond your departure date — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Tajikistan
Immigration officers at Dushanbe International Airport routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. Have a printed copy or a screenshot ready on your phone — they may not accept verbal assurances.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Border officers sometimes ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a pre-booked hotel. A printed booking confirmation or a letter from a host (with their contact details) covers you.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Tajikistan does not publish a fixed minimum amount, but carrying around $50–$100 USD per day in cash or having a recent bank statement on your phone is a safe bet. ATMs in Dushanbe work, but outside the capital cash is king.Recommended
GBAO permit required for Pamir Highway
If you plan to travel to the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (including the Pamir Highway), you must get a GBAO permit. Without it, you'll be stopped at checkpoints and fined. Get it in Dushanbe at the OVIR office or through a tour agency before heading east.
No visa-free extension — plan accordingly
The 30-day visa-free stay cannot be extended. If you need more time, apply for a visa at a Tajik embassy before your trip. Overstaying even by a day can result in fines and future entry bans.

What happens at the border

1
Arrival at Dushanbe International Airport
After landing, follow signs to 'Passport Control'. Join the queue for foreign passports. Have your passport and boarding pass ready. The officer will check your passport, ask your purpose of visit and length of stay, then stamp you in. The whole process usually takes 5-10 minutes if there's no queue.
2
Land border crossings (e.g., from Uzbekistan or Kyrgyzstan)
At land borders like Oybek (from Uzbekistan) or Kyzyl-Art (from Kyrgyzstan), the process is similar but can be slower. Have your passport and any vehicle documents ready. Officers may ask for your accommodation address. Expect 15-30 minutes depending on traffic.
3
Departure from Tajikistan
At the airport, go through security, then passport control. The officer will check your exit stamp and verify you haven't overstayed. Keep your boarding pass and passport handy. No exit visa is needed for Polish citizens.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free entry is not extendable. If you need to stay longer than 30 days, you must apply for a visa at a Tajik embassy before travel, or leave and re-enter (though this may raise questions). Overstaying can result in fines of around 100-200 TJS per day and possible deportation.
For stays under 30 days, no registration is required. If you stay longer (with a visa), you must register with the Ministry of Internal Affairs within 3 days. Since Polish citizens get 30 days visa-free, this doesn't apply to most short trips.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You'll be fined approximately 100-200 TJS per day (around €8-16) at the airport when leaving. In extreme cases, you could be banned from re-entering Tajikistan for up to 5 years. Always leave on time or get a visa extension before your 30 days expire.
Yes, Polish citizens can enter via land borders. The most common crossings are Oybek (from Uzbekistan) and Kyzyl-Art (from Kyrgyzstan). The visa-free policy applies the same as at airports. Just ensure your passport is valid and you have an onward ticket. Land crossings can be slower — expect 15-30 minutes.
Yes, even with visa-free entry, you need a separate GBAO permit to visit the Pamir Highway or areas like Khorog and Murghab. You can get this at the OVIR office in Dushanbe (costs about 20-30 TJS) or apply in advance through a travel agency. Without it, you'll be turned back at checkpoints.
No, it's not mandatory for visa-free entry, but it's strongly recommended. Medical facilities are basic outside Dushanbe, and emergency evacuation can cost thousands. Many travellers buy insurance from providers like SafetyWing or World Nomads.
The local currency is the Tajikistani somoni (TJS). US dollars are widely accepted for exchange and sometimes for payments. Bring crisp, new USD bills — old or damaged notes may be refused. ATMs are available in Dushanbe and major towns, but less reliable in rural areas. Credit cards are accepted only in upscale hotels and restaurants in the capital.
