Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Macau. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required by Macau immigration, but airlines may enforce a 6-month rule — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Macau
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they check this at the border, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation or a letter of invitation from your host in Macau. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it ready avoids delays if they do.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient means of support
Have access to at least 5,000 MOP (around 620 USD) for your stay — either cash, card, or bank statement. Immigration may ask to see it if you look like you might work or overstay.Recommended
No visa needed — just show up
Portuguese passport holders get 90 days visa-free in Macau. No application, no fee, no paperwork before you travel. Just make sure your passport is valid for 6+ months from your entry date.
Overstaying is expensive
The fine is MOP 500 (about €55) per day. Overstay by a week and you're looking at €385. Set a reminder on your phone for day 85 to be safe.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Macau International Airport (MFM) or ferry terminal
Join the 'Visitors' queue at immigration. Have your passport and return ticket ready. The officer will stamp you in — usually takes 30 seconds to 2 minutes. No forms to fill.
2
Collect your luggage and exit
After the stamp, grab your bags from the carousel and walk through the green 'Nothing to Declare' channel unless you have goods to declare.
3
Activate your eSIM or buy a local SIM
If you pre-arranged an eSIM (like Airalo), it activates as soon as you land. Otherwise, buy a prepaid SIM at the airport or at any convenience store in town.
