Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Portuguese passport needs to be valid for at least 30 days beyond your intended departure date from South Africa. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from South Africa
Immigration officers at OR Tambo, Cape Town, and King Shaka routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they'll check the date matches your visa-free 90-day limit.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed hotel confirmation or a letter of invitation from your host. Border officers occasionally ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statements or cash
Have a recent bank statement or a credit card showing available funds. South Africa doesn't publish a fixed minimum, but showing at least ZAR 3,000 per day of stay covers most scenarios.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you enter South Africa. Airlines check this before you board — if your passport expires sooner, you won't be allowed to fly. Renew early.
Keep your documents accessible
Immigration at Johannesburg OR Tambo and Cape Town International can have long queues. Have your passport, arrival card, return ticket, and accommodation confirmation ready in a clear folder to speed things up.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before you fly
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry), print or save your return ticket and first night's accommodation confirmation. If you're flying into Johannesburg OR Tambo or Cape Town International, immigration queues can be long — have everything ready in a clear plastic folder.
2
Fill out the arrival form on the plane
You'll receive a small white arrival card during the flight. Fill it out in black ink — name, passport number, flight number, address in South Africa. Keep it with your passport.
3
Go through immigration at the airport
At the immigration counter, hand over your passport and the arrival card. The officer may ask how long you're staying and where you're staying. Answer clearly. They'll stamp your passport with a visitor's entry permit valid for up to 90 days.
4
Collect your luggage and proceed to customs
After immigration, grab your bags from the carousel. Customs is usually green channel for most tourists — unless you're carrying restricted goods (like meat, plants, or large amounts of cash).

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free entry is not extendable for Portuguese passport holders. If you want to stay longer, you must apply for a temporary residence visa before you travel. Overstaying can result in fines or a ban from re-entering.
Only if you're arriving from a country with yellow fever risk (like parts of Africa or South America). If you're flying directly from Portugal, no vaccine is required. But if you've recently visited a risk country, you'll need the yellow fever certificate.
You'll be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry at the border. The 6-month validity is strictly enforced. Renew your passport before you travel.
Technically, the visa-free entry is for tourism and business (meetings, conferences). Remote work for a foreign employer is in a grey area. If you're planning to work remotely for more than a few days, consider applying for a remote work visa (available since 2024) — it allows stays up to 3 years.
Not officially required for Portuguese passport holders, but immigration officers may ask how you'll support yourself during your stay. Having a credit card or a bank statement on your phone is enough.
Use the eGates if available — they're for biometric passports. Otherwise, join the queue for foreign passports. Have your arrival card pre-filled and your passport open to the photo page. Avoid peak times (early morning arrivals from Europe).
No, you need a return or onward ticket. Airlines check this before boarding. If you're planning to travel overland to a neighboring country, you'll need proof of that onward journey (e.g., a bus ticket).
