Qatari passport holders need a visa to enter Australia. You must apply for and receive a visa before you travel — there are no visa-on-arrival options for Qatari citizens. The most common route is the Visitor visa (subclass 600), which lets you stay for up to 3, 6, or 12 months depending on your circumstances.

Apply early — don't book flights first
Visa processing can take 2–4 weeks or longer. Don't book non-refundable flights or hotels until your visa is granted. If you're refused, you'll lose that money.
Biosecurity is strict
Australia has some of the world's toughest biosecurity laws. Declare any food, plant material, or animal products on your arrival card. Fines start at AUD 2,664 for undeclared items — even if it's just an apple.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for your visa online
Go to the Australian Department of Home Affairs ImmiAccount portal (online.immi.gov.au). Create an account, fill out the Visitor visa (subclass 600) application, upload your passport scan and any supporting documents, and pay the AUD 190 fee. You'll get a confirmation email with a reference number.
2
Wait for processing
Processing usually takes 2–4 weeks, but can stretch longer if your application needs extra checks. You can track the status in ImmiAccount. Don't book non-refundable flights until you have your visa.
3
Receive your visa grant
You'll get an email with your visa grant notification. It will state your visa number, conditions, and the date by which you must enter Australia. The visa is linked electronically to your passport — no label needed, but you can print the notification to carry with you.
4
Arrive at the airport
At Australian airports (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, etc.), use the ePassport gates if your passport has the chip symbol — they're fast. Otherwise, join the queue for a border officer. Have your passport and visa grant notification ready. You'll be asked about your trip purpose and how long you're staying. Answer honestly.
5
Clear immigration and collect your bags
After the border check, you'll go through customs and quarantine. Australia has strict biosecurity — declare any food, plant material, or animal products. Then collect your luggage and exit.

Frequently asked questions

Processing times vary, but most applications are decided within 2–4 weeks. Some can take longer if additional checks are needed. You can check current processing times on the Department of Home Affairs website. It's best to apply at least 6–8 weeks before your planned travel.
No. The Visitor visa is strictly for tourism, visiting family, or short business activities (like meetings or conferences). You cannot work or study for more than 3 months. If you want to work, you need a different visa, like a Temporary Skill Shortage visa (subclass 482).
The standard Visitor visa (subclass 600) allows stays of up to 3, 6, or 12 months, depending on what the immigration officer grants. Most first-time visitors get 3 months. You can't extend a Visitor visa beyond 12 months in total — you'd need to leave and reapply.
Yes, you can apply for a further Visitor visa (subclass 600) before your current one expires, but the total stay cannot exceed 12 months. You must apply online through ImmiAccount and pay the fee again. It's not automatic — you need a valid reason, like a family emergency or medical treatment.
Yes, immigration officers can ask to see a confirmed onward ticket. If you don't have one, you may be refused entry. It's a standard requirement for all visitor visa holders.
Overstaying is a serious offence. You could be detained, removed from Australia, and banned from returning for up to 3 years. If you realise you're overstaying, contact the Department of Home Affairs immediately to regularise your status.
No. Australia has no visa-on-arrival facility for any nationality. You must have a valid visa before you board your flight. Airlines check this before you fly — without a visa, you won't be allowed to board.
