Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport must be valid for the entire period you plan to stay in Canada. Canada does not require 6 months of validity beyond your departure date, but airlines may enforce this — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Visa application
Apply for a visitor visa before travel
Qatari passport holders need a visitor visa to enter Canada. Apply online through the IRCC portal at least 4 weeks before your trip — processing times vary. You will need to submit biometrics (fingerprints and photo) at a Visa Application Centre.Apply for visitor visaRequired
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Canada
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you will leave Canada before your visa expires. Have a printed or digital copy ready — airlines also check this at check-in.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a letter of invitation from your host in Canada. Officers may ask where you are staying on arrival.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Have bank statements, a credit card, or a letter from your employer showing you have enough money for your trip. No fixed amount is published, but expect to show at least CAD $1,000–$2,000 for a short visit.Recommended
Visa required — no exceptions
Qatari passport holders cannot enter Canada without a pre-approved visitor visa. There is no eTA or visa-on-arrival option. Plan ahead: processing can take weeks.
Biometrics appointment in Doha
The Canada Visa Application Centre in Doha is at Al Fardan Office Tower, 4th floor, Al Corniche Street. Book your appointment online after receiving the Biometric Instruction Letter. Walk-ins are not accepted.
Multiple-entry visa likely
Canadian visitor visas for Qatari citizens are usually issued as multiple-entry, valid for up to 10 years or until your passport expires. This means you can travel to Canada multiple times without reapplying.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Gather your passport (valid 6+ months), bank statements, flight booking, accommodation confirmation, and any invitation letters. Scan everything as PDF or JPEG.
2
Apply online
Go to the IRCC website, create an account, and fill out the visitor visa application (IMM 5257). Upload your documents and pay the fee (CAD 100 for visa + CAD 85 for biometrics).
3
Give biometrics
After submitting, you'll get a Biometric Instruction Letter within 24 hours. Book an appointment at the Canada Visa Application Centre in Doha (Al Fardan Office Tower, 4th floor). Bring your passport and the letter.
4
Wait for processing
Standard processing for Qatar is around 2–4 weeks, but can be longer during peak seasons. Check your IRCC account for updates. You may be asked for additional documents.
5
Receive your visa
If approved, you'll get a visa counterfoil in your passport (either by mail or pickup). It will show the validity period and number of entries. You can now travel to Canada.
6
Arrive in Canada
At the airport, go to the visitor queue. Present your passport with visa, return flight, and accommodation details. The border officer may ask about your plans. Answer honestly. You'll get a stamp allowing up to 6 months stay.

Frequently asked questions

Standard processing is 2–4 weeks, but it can take longer during busy periods (summer, holidays). Apply at least 6–8 weeks before your planned travel. You can check current processing times on the IRCC website.
No. There is no visa-on-arrival for Qatari passport holders. You must get a visa before you travel. The only exception is if you are transiting through a Canadian airport to a third country — you may still need a visa unless you qualify for the Transit Without Visa program (rare for Qatari citizens).
The visa application fee is CAD 100 per person. Biometrics cost an additional CAD 85 per person. If you apply with family, each person pays separately. Fees are non-refundable if your application is refused.
Biometrics are valid for 10 years. If you gave them for a previous Canadian visa application, you don't need to repeat them. Check your IRCC account to see if your biometrics are still valid.
No. A visitor visa only allows tourism, visiting family, or short business meetings. You cannot work or study without a separate work permit or study permit. If you want to work or study, apply for the appropriate permit before travelling.
You'll receive a letter explaining the reason (e.g., insufficient funds, weak ties to Qatar). You can reapply with stronger documents. There is no appeal process. Common fixes: show more bank savings, provide a letter from your employer, or include proof of property ownership in Qatar.
Yes, you can apply for an extension before your current status expires. Apply online through your IRCC account. You must show you still have funds and a reason to stay. Processing takes about 2–3 months. Overstaying without permission can lead to a ban.
