Visa on arrival
Visa on arrival
Get your visa on arrival at Maputo International Airport and other land borders. Have 50 USD in cash ready for the single-entry visa (30 days). The queue moves slowly — budget 30–45 minutes at the counter.Apply onlineRequired
Valid passport
Passport validity
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Return ticket
Immigration officers routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or onward ticket ready. Without one, you may be refused entry and sent back on the next flight.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking
Carry a printed hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host. Officers at Maputo airport ask for this about half the time — having it saves a 15-minute delay.Recommended
Proof of funds
Financial means
Have at least 500 USD in cash or a credit card statement showing available funds. Officers rarely check this, but if they do, you need to show you can cover your stay.Recommended
Cash only at immigration
The visa on arrival fee must be paid in cash — no cards accepted. Bring USD in good condition. ATMs at Maputo airport are unreliable for this purpose.
Visa on arrival is single-entry
If you leave Mozambique (even for a day trip to South Africa), you'll need to pay for a new visa on arrival when you come back. Plan your itinerary accordingly.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at immigration counter
At Maputo International Airport (MPM) or other entry points, follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival' or 'Immigration'. Join the queue for foreign passports.
2
Present documents and pay fee
Hand over your passport, completed arrival card (usually given on the plane), and your return ticket. Tell the officer you need a visa on arrival. Pay the fee in cash — USD is easiest. They'll process and stamp your passport.
3
Collect your passport and proceed
Once the visa is issued, the officer will return your passport. Check that the entry stamp and visa dates are correct. Then head to baggage claim and customs.
