Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa on arrival
Visa on arrival
Get your visa at the airport upon arrival. Pay the fee in cash (USD, EUR, or GBP) — $25 USD for a single-entry 30-day visa. Have a passport photo ready, though officers often skip it. The queue at Cairo Airport can take 30–60 minutes.Apply onlineRequired
Valid passport
Passport validity
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date in Egypt. Airlines check this strictly at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed copy or a screenshot of your booking ready. If you are overlanding to Sudan or Israel, a bus ticket or ferry booking works too.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking
Carry a printed hotel confirmation or a booking.com reservation. Officers rarely check it for short stays, but having it ready avoids delays. If you are staying with friends, a letter of invitation helps.Recommended
Proof of funds
Financial means
Have at least $1,000 USD in cash or a credit card statement showing available funds. Officers almost never ask, but if you look underprepared, they may request proof. ATMs are plentiful in Cairo and tourist areas.Recommended
Cash only at the visa kiosk
The bank kiosk before immigration accepts only cash — US dollars or euros. No credit cards, no Egyptian pounds. Bring exact change if possible. ATMs are available after immigration, but not before.
Visa on arrival vs e-visa
You can also apply for an e-visa before travel (around USD 30, processing 3-5 business days). The e-visa lets you skip the kiosk queue. But the visa on arrival is simpler and cheaper for most travellers.

What happens at the border

1
Land and head to the bank kiosk
After deplaning at Cairo (CAI), Hurghada (HRG), or Sharm el-Sheikh (SSH), follow signs to 'Bank' or 'Visa on Arrival' before immigration. There's a small kiosk where you pay USD 25 per person. Get a receipt.
2
Get your visa sticker
Take the receipt to the adjacent counter. The officer will stick a visa into your passport. No forms to fill out.
3
Proceed to immigration
Join the line for foreign passports. Hand over your passport with the visa sticker, your boarding pass, and your return ticket if asked. The officer stamps you in.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, grab your bags from the carousel and walk through customs. Green channel if you have nothing to declare.
