Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover entire stay
Your passport must be valid for the full duration of your stay in Tajikistan. Tajikistan does not enforce a 6-month validity rule beyond your departure date, but some airlines may still ask for it — check with your carrier before check-in.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of exit
Immigration officers at Dushanbe International Airport routinely ask for a confirmed return or onward ticket. Have a printed copy or a screenshot ready on your phone — they rarely check the date, just that you have one.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Carry a printed hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from a host in Tajikistan. Officers at land borders are more likely to ask for this than at Dushanbe airport, but have it ready either way.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient cash or card
You may be asked to show you have enough money for your stay — around $50 USD per day is a safe benchmark. ATMs in Dushanbe work with Visa and Mastercard, but carry some US dollars in cash for smaller towns.Recommended
Visa-free only for 30 days
Romanian passport holders get 30 days visa-free. This is not extendable. If you plan to stay longer, apply for a visa before you go.
Passport validity is critical
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you won't be allowed to fly.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Dushanbe International Airport
Most flights land at Dushanbe International Airport (DYU). After deplaning, follow signs to 'Passport Control'. There are separate queues for Tajik citizens and foreigners — join the foreigners line.
2
Present your passport and ticket
Hand over your passport and return/onward ticket. The officer will check your passport validity, stamp you in, and hand it back. The whole process usually takes 2-5 minutes.
3
Collect your luggage and exit
After passport control, head to baggage claim. Then proceed through customs — there's usually a green channel for nothing to declare. If you have goods over $10,000 or restricted items, use the red channel.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free entry is not extendable. If you need to stay longer than 30 days, you must apply for a visa in advance at a Tajik embassy or consulate. Overstaying can result in fines and possible deportation.
You'll need to apply for a visa before you travel. Contact the Embassy of Tajikistan in Bucharest or apply online if an e-visa is available for your purpose (e.g., work, study). The visa-free policy only covers short visits.
For stays under 30 days, no registration is required. If you somehow get an extension or a longer visa, you must register with the Ministry of Internal Affairs within 3 days of arrival. Hotels usually handle this for you.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You'll likely face a fine (around 100-500 TJS depending on the duration) and could be banned from re-entering for a period. Always leave on time or get proper documentation.
Yes, the visa-free policy applies at all border crossings — airports and land borders. Just make sure you have the same documents: valid passport, return ticket, and accommodation booking. Land crossings can be slower, so expect longer queues.
No, it's not mandatory for entry. But it's strongly recommended. Medical facilities are basic outside Dushanbe, and evacuation to a decent hospital can cost thousands. A good travel insurance policy covers that.
The local currency is the Tajikistani somoni (TJS). US dollars are widely accepted for exchange, and ATMs are available in Dushanbe and major towns. Bring crisp, new USD notes for the best exchange rates. Credit cards are not widely accepted outside hotels and upscale restaurants.
