Apply early — don't leave it to the last minute
Visa processing can take 4+ weeks, and the Australian Department of Home Affairs may request additional documents at any time. If you book flights before your visa is granted, make sure they're refundable or flexible.
Serbia is not eligible for eVisitor or eTA
Unlike many European countries, Serbian passport holders can't use the quick online eVisitor or eTA systems. You must go through the full Visitor visa (subclass 600) application — plan for that extra time.

What happens at the border

1
Gather your documents
Scan your passport bio page, recent passport photo, bank statements, and any invitation letters or travel bookings. Have them ready as PDFs or images.
2
Create an ImmiAccount
Go to the Australian Department of Home Affairs website and create an ImmiAccount. This is your portal for the entire application.
3
Complete the online application
Fill out the Visitor visa (subclass 600) form. Be honest and thorough — any discrepancies can delay or reject your application. Double-check your passport number and dates.
4
Pay the visa fee
The application fee is around AUD 190 (as of 2026). Pay online with a credit or debit card. The fee is non-refundable, even if your visa is refused.
5
Wait for processing
Processing can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks. Check your ImmiAccount regularly for updates or requests for more information.
6
Arrive in Australia
When you land, head to the ePassport gates if your passport has the chip — otherwise join the queue for a border officer. Have your passport and any supporting documents ready. You'll likely be asked about your stay and funds.

Transiting through Australia

Transit visa required

Serbian passport holders transiting through Australia (including airside) must hold a Transit visa (subclass 771) unless they have a valid Australian visa or eVisitor. Apply online via ImmiAccount.

Exceptions & conditions
  • Holders of a valid Australian visa (including Visitor, eVisitor, or permanent resident) do not need a Transit visa.
  • Citizens of certain countries may be eligible for a transit waiver if they hold a confirmed onward ticket and stay airside for less than 8 hours – but Serbia is not on the waiver list, so a Transit visa is required.

Frequently asked questions

The Visitor visa (subclass 600) typically allows stays of up to 3, 6, or 12 months, depending on what the immigration officer grants. Most Serbian applicants get 3 months. The exact duration is printed on your visa grant letter.
No — this visa is not extendable. If you want to stay longer, you'd need to apply for a different visa (like a student or work visa) before your current one expires. Overstaying even a day can lead to a ban from re-entering.
The application fee is AUD 190 (about €115 as of 2026). This is non-refundable, regardless of the outcome. You might also pay extra for biometrics or health checks if requested.
Processing times vary. For Serbian applicants, it's usually 2–4 weeks, but can take longer if your application is complex or if the department requests more documents. Apply at least a month before your planned travel.
Possibly. The Australian government may ask you to provide fingerprints and a photo at a visa application centre. In Serbia, you'd go to the Australian Visa Application Centre in Belgrade if requested. You'll be notified in your ImmiAccount.
No. The Visitor visa (subclass 600) strictly prohibits work. You can study for up to 3 months, but any paid employment is not allowed. If you're caught working, your visa will be cancelled and you'll be deported.
You'll receive a written refusal notice explaining why. You can appeal to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT) within 21 days, but this costs extra and takes time. Alternatively, you can reapply with corrected information — just be aware the fee is non-refundable.
