Proof of confirmed onward travel
Border officers at Helsinki Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking showing you leave the Schengen area within your visa's validity.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Immigration may ask for your accommodation details. Carry a hotel confirmation, rental agreement, or a signed invitation letter from your host in Finland.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can cover your stay
Finnish border guards may request proof you have at least €50 per day of your stay. Bank statements, traveller's cheques, or a sponsor letter work. Have the documents ready in your hand luggage.Recommended
Apply early — no rush service
Finland does not offer expedited visa processing for Russian citizens. Standard processing takes 15 days, and delays are common in summer. Apply at least 4–6 weeks before your departure.
Schengen rules apply
A Finnish visa lets you travel to all 27 Schengen countries. But you must enter Finland first (or spend the most days there). You cannot use it to 'hop' to another Schengen country without a clear itinerary.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Gather all required documents: valid passport, completed visa application form, travel insurance, flight and hotel bookings, bank statements, and passport photos. Make copies of everything.
2
Submit your visa application
Book an appointment at the Finnish embassy in Moscow or at a VFS Global visa application centre. Submit your application in person — biometrics (fingerprints and photo) are required. Pay the visa fee (€80 for adults, €40 for children 6–12).
3
Wait for processing
Standard processing takes 15 calendar days. During peak season (summer, Christmas) it can take up to 30 days. You can track your application online if you applied through VFS.
4
Collect your passport
Once approved, collect your passport from the centre or have it couriered to you. Check the visa sticker carefully: dates, number of entries, and validity period.
5
Arrive in Finland
At Helsinki Airport or any border crossing, present your passport with the visa sticker. The border officer may ask for your return ticket and proof of accommodation. Answer clearly and honestly.
