Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Romania eVisa
Apply for a Romanian eVisa at the official portal before travel. The eVisa is valid for stays up to 90 days within a 180-day period across the entire Schengen zone. Processing takes up to 30 days, so apply well in advance.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your intended departure date from Romania
Your passport needs at least 3 months of validity after your planned exit from Romania. Airlines check this at check-in, and Romanian border officers enforce it strictly.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Border officers may ask for a return or onward ticket to confirm you're leaving Romania within the visa's validity period. Have a printed or digital copy ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Keep a hotel reservation or an invitation letter from your host handy. Immigration officers occasionally ask for it, especially if you're staying in private accommodation.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient means of subsistence
You may need to show you have enough money for your stay — roughly €50 per day. A bank statement or credit card usually works.Recommended
Apply early — no last-minute options
There is no visa-on-arrival or eTA for Rwandan passport holders. You must get the visa before you fly. Processing can take 2–3 weeks, so start your application at least a month before your trip.
Keep digital copies of everything
Save screenshots of your visa approval, return ticket, and accommodation confirmation on your phone. Also email copies to yourself. If your phone dies or gets lost, you can still access them.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the visa online
Go to evisa.mae.ro/en, create an account, fill in the application form, upload your documents (passport scan, photo, travel itinerary, accommodation proof, insurance), and pay the fee. Processing usually takes 10–15 business days.
2
Wait for approval
You'll receive an email once your visa is approved. Print the approval letter and keep it with your passport. Do not book non-refundable flights until you have the visa.
3
Arrive at the airport in Romania
At passport control (e.g., Henri Coandă Airport in Bucharest), hand over your passport and the visa approval letter. The officer may ask for your return ticket and accommodation proof. Answer clearly and calmly.
4
Get your passport stamped
If everything is in order, the officer will stamp your passport with the entry date and the allowed stay duration. Check the stamp before leaving the counter.
