Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to be in the UK. No minimum validity period beyond your stay is required by UK immigration, but airlines may check for at least 6 months validity — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the UK
Immigration officers at UK borders routinely ask for proof of a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking, train ticket, or ferry reservation showing you leave within 180 days.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. Have a hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a letter from a friend or family member with their address and contact details ready.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
You may be asked to demonstrate you have enough money for your trip. Carry a recent bank statement, credit card, or cash — there's no fixed minimum amount, but officers look for enough to cover accommodation, food, and transport without working.Recommended
Overstaying is serious
If you stay beyond 180 days without permission, you risk a ban from the UK for up to 10 years. Set a calendar reminder to leave before your time is up.
ePassport gates are the fastest option
At most UK airports, Swedish passport holders aged 12+ can use automated ePassport gates. No conversation needed — just scan your passport and walk through. If you're travelling with children under 12, you'll need to use the staffed booth.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before you fly
Have your passport, return ticket, and accommodation booking easily accessible — either printed or saved on your phone. At check-in, the airline may ask to see your return ticket.
2
Arrive at UK border control
At airports like Heathrow, Gatwick, or Manchester, join the 'ePassport gates' queue if you're 12 or older. These automated gates scan your passport and let you through in under a minute. If the gates are closed or you're travelling with children under 12, join the 'All Other Passports' queue.
3
Answer the officer's questions
A Border Force officer may ask: purpose of visit, where you're staying, how long, and when you're leaving. Answer clearly and honestly. If you have a return ticket and accommodation, show them. The whole conversation usually takes 2–3 minutes.
4
Receive your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry. Check the stamp — it may include a handwritten 'leave by' date. If you used an ePassport gate, you won't get a stamp, but your entry is still recorded electronically.

No, Swedish passport holders do not need a visa to transit through the UK, even if you pass through border control. You can transit airside (stay in the airport) or landside (enter the UK) for up to 48 hours without a visa, as long as you have a confirmed onward ticket.
Yes, if you are 12 or older and hold a biometric Swedish passport. The gates are available at most major airports including Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Stansted, Luton, Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Birmingham. They are usually faster than the staffed booths.
You will likely be refused entry. The UK requires at least 6 months validity from your date of entry. If your passport is damaged (e.g., torn pages, water damage), renew it before you travel. Border Force can deny entry even if you have a valid visa.
No. Swedish citizens do not need to register with the police when visiting the UK for up to 180 days. This requirement only applies to certain nationalities and visa categories.
