Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Swedish passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in the Netherlands. No minimum validity beyond your stay is required for Schengen entry, but airlines sometimes enforce 3 months — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen area
Immigration officers at Schiphol and other Schengen entry points routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Keep a copy of your hotel reservation, Airbnb confirmation, or a signed invitation letter from your host. Officers rarely ask for it for Swedish passport holders, but having it ready avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
You don't need to show a specific amount, but have a bank statement or credit card ready. Officers may ask if you can cover your stay — €50–€100 per day is a safe benchmark.Recommended
Schengen area rules apply
Your 90-day visa-free stay covers all 27 Schengen countries, not just the Netherlands. Days spent in France, Germany, Italy, etc., all count toward the same 90-day limit. Use the Schengen calculator to track your days.
Airlines check passport validity
Even if you think you'll slip through, airlines often deny boarding if your passport has less than 6 months validity. Don't risk it — check your passport well before your flight.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Schengen border
At Amsterdam Schiphol or any other Dutch airport, join the 'All Passports' queue. Have your passport, boarding pass, and any supporting documents (return ticket, accommodation) ready. The officer will check your passport, may ask your purpose and length of stay, and stamp you in.
2
Present documents if asked
If the officer asks, show your return ticket, accommodation booking, and proof of funds. Answer clearly and honestly. Most Swedish citizens breeze through in under a minute.
3
Receive entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date. Check the stamp is legible before walking away. This stamp proves you entered legally and starts your 90-day clock.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, collect your bags from the carousel and walk through customs (green channel if nothing to declare). You're now in the Netherlands.

Frequently asked questions

Up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This applies to the entire Schengen area, so days spent in other Schengen countries count toward the same limit.
No, the visa-free stay is not extendable for tourism or business. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a national visa or residence permit before your 90 days expire.
Yes, any onward ticket out of the Schengen area works. It doesn't have to be from the Netherlands specifically.
You risk being denied boarding by the airline or entry by immigration. Renew your passport before traveling — it's not worth the hassle.
Technically, the visa-free regime is for tourism and business meetings, not for remote work. In practice, brief remote work is usually tolerated, but if you plan to work for a Dutch employer or stay long-term, you need a proper work visa.
If you stay less than 90 days, no registration is needed. For longer stays, you must register at the local municipality (gemeente) within 5 days of arrival.
Overstaying can result in a fine, a ban from re-entering the Schengen area, and a stamp in your passport. If you realize you'll overstay, contact the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) before your visa-free period ends.
