Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Swedish passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Macau. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required by Macau immigration, but airlines may enforce a 6-month rule — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Macau
Immigration officers at Macau International Airport routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready showing you leave within 90 days.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a copy of your hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host in Macau. Officers rarely ask, but having it ready avoids delays at the counter.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient money for your stay
Have access to at least 5,000 MOP (around 620 USD) or equivalent in cash, cards, or bank statements. Immigration may ask to see you can support yourself without working.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry. If it's even one day short, you'll be refused boarding or entry. Check your passport now.
Keep a digital copy of your documents
Save photos of your passport, return ticket, and hotel booking on your phone. If you lose your passport, these copies make replacement much faster.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Macau International Airport (MFM)
Follow signs to 'Arrivals' and join the 'Foreign Passports' queue. Have your passport and boarding pass ready. The officer will check your passport validity, ask your purpose of visit, and may ask for your return ticket or accommodation. You'll get a stamp and be through in 5-10 minutes.
2
Ferry from Hong Kong or mainland China
If arriving by ferry (e.g., from Hong Kong or Shenzhen), you'll go through immigration at the Macau Maritime Ferry Terminal. Same process: passport, stamp, and you're in. Keep your ferry ticket handy.
3
Border crossing from Zhuhai, China
If crossing by land at the Gongbei checkpoint or the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, join the 'Foreign Passports' lane. Have your passport and any entry card (sometimes handed out on the bus) ready. The officer may ask your travel plans. Expect a short queue during peak hours.
