Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to be in Mexico. Immigration officers rarely check for 6 months validity beyond your stay, but airlines sometimes do — if your passport expires within 3 months of travel, renew it before booking.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Mexico
Immigration at Mexico City and Cancún airports routinely asks for a return or onward flight booking. Have a printed or digital copy of your ticket out of Mexico within 180 days. A bus ticket to Guatemala or a flight to Cuba also works.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Officers sometimes ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a return ticket. Have a hotel confirmation or a letter from a host with their address and phone number. Airbnb bookings are fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Immigration may ask how you'll fund your trip. Carry a credit card and a bank statement showing at least $500 USD or equivalent. Cash is less common but accepted.Recommended
Keep your FMM safe
The bottom half of the FMM form is your proof of legal stay. Lose it and you'll pay a fine (around 500–600 MXN) when you leave. Keep it with your passport at all times.
180 days is the maximum
Immigration officers can grant fewer days (e.g., 30, 90, or 180). If you want the full 180, ask politely when they stamp your passport. They usually grant it without issue.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Mexican immigration
At Cancún, Mexico City, or any other airport, follow signs to 'Migración' (Immigration). Join the queue for foreign visitors. Have your passport and FMM form ready.
2
Present your documents
Hand over your passport and the completed FMM form. The officer may ask your purpose of visit, how long you're staying, and where you're staying. Answer briefly and honestly.
3
Get your entry stamp
The officer stamps your passport and returns the bottom half of the FMM. Keep that slip with your passport at all times — you'll surrender it when you leave.
4
Collect luggage and proceed
After immigration, pick up your bags from the carousel. You may pass through customs (random red/green light system). If you get a green light, you're free to go.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free stay is strictly 180 days. You cannot extend it from within Mexico. If you want to stay longer, you must leave the country (e.g., to the US or Guatemala) and re-enter, but immigration may question frequent back-to-back visits. For stays over 180 days, apply for a temporary resident visa at a Mexican consulate before traveling.
You'll need to pay a replacement fee at the airport when you leave — typically around 500–600 MXN (about 25–30 EUR). Keep the card with your passport to avoid this hassle.
No, Swedish passport holders can do business activities (meetings, conferences, site visits) visa-free for up to 180 days. You cannot get paid by a Mexican company while on this status. If you'll be working for a Mexican employer, you need a work visa.
Yes, same rules apply. At land borders, you'll fill out an FMM form and get a stamp. The 180-day limit still counts from the day you enter. Keep the FMM slip — you'll need it when leaving by land or air.
No, it's not required by law. But it's strongly recommended. A hospital stay for something like a broken leg can cost thousands of euros. Many Swedish travel insurance policies cover Mexico — check yours before you go.
You'll likely be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry by Mexican immigration. Renew your passport before traveling. Swedish passports are usually processed within a few weeks.
Technically, immigration officers can ask for proof you can support yourself (bank statements, credit card, cash). In practice, it's rarely requested for Swedish passport holders. But have a bank statement or card ready just in case.
