New Zealand entry requirements for Sweden passport holders
Swedish passport holders don't need a traditional visa for New Zealand, but you must get an NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) before you fly. It's a quick online application that takes a few minutes and is valid for up to 2 years. You'll also pay the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) as part of the application.
Entry requirements
| Requirement | Details | Status |
|---|---|---|
| NZeTA (evisa)You need this digital travel authorization before you fly — it is not a visa but a mandatory entry permission. New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority | Swedish citizens must obtain an NZeTA before boarding a flight to New Zealand. Apply online or via the mobile app; the fee includes an International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL). Approval is usually granted within minutes to a few days. | Required |
| Passport validityIf your passport expires sooner, you may be denied boarding or entry. Valid for at least 6 months beyond departure | Your Swedish passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your intended date of departure from New Zealand. Ensure it meets this before booking. | Required |
| Blank passport pagesA blank page is needed for the border officer to stamp your passport. At least 1 blank page | Your passport must have at least 1 blank page for entry stamps. This is the minimum required by New Zealand immigration. | Required |
| Return or onward ticketImmigration may ask to see proof that you will leave New Zealand before your visa-free period ends. Proof of departure | You must hold a confirmed return or onward ticket to a country you are eligible to enter, with a departure date within your permitted stay (usually up to 3 months for Swedish citizens). | Required |
| Proof of fundsBorder officers may ask how you will pay for your trip; having proof avoids delays. Sufficient money for your stay | You should be able to show evidence of sufficient funds (e.g., bank statements, credit cards) to cover your accommodation, living costs, and departure from New Zealand. There is no fixed amount, but you must convince an officer you can support yourself. | Required |
| Visa-free stay limitPlan your trip so you leave before the 3-month limit — extensions are not available for this visa-free entry. Maximum 3 months | As a Swedish citizen, you can stay in New Zealand for up to 3 months without a visa. This stay is not extendable (per database). Overstaying is a serious offence. | Required |

Transiting through New Zealand
Swedish citizens transiting through New Zealand airports do not need a visa, but must hold a valid NZeTA (including IVL) if they will pass through immigration control. If staying airside and not passing through immigration, no NZeTA is required.
- If you are an Australian permanent resident, you may transit without an NZeTA.
