Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Japan does not require 6 months of passport validity beyond your departure date — just enough to cover your stay. Some airlines still enforce the 6-month rule at check-in, so check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Japan
Immigration officers often ask for a return or onward ticket at arrival. Enforcement varies by officer — some wave you through, others check. Have a printed or digital copy of your outbound booking ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Not formally required for visa-free entry, but having a hotel confirmation or a letter from your host can speed up the immigration interview. Keep a copy on your phone or printed.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Immigration rarely asks for bank statements, but if they do, show at least ¥100,000 (roughly $700 USD) or a credit card with sufficient limit. A few seconds of scrolling through your banking app is enough.Recommended

Passport validity is strictly enforced
Japanese immigration requires your passport to be valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you won't be allowed to fly.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at a Japanese airport
You'll land at Narita, Haneda, Kansai, or another international airport. Follow signs to 'Arrivals' and then 'Foreign Passports'.
2
Queue at immigration
Join the line for foreign visitors. Have your passport and the QR code from Visit Japan Web (if you registered) ready. If you didn't register, you'll fill out a paper landing card.
3
Present your documents
Hand over your passport and any forms. The officer may ask about your stay duration, purpose, and return ticket. Answer honestly and briefly.
4
Get your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with a 'Temporary Visitor' status. This allows up to 90 days. Keep the stamp visible — you'll need it when leaving.
5
Collect luggage and clear customs
After immigration, pick up your bags and walk through customs. You may be asked to open bags or declare items. Green channel for nothing to declare, red for goods over allowances.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free stay cannot be extended. You must leave Japan before day 90. Overstaying can result in fines, detention, or a ban from re-entering Japan.
You would need to apply for a different visa category (e.g., work, student, or long-term tourist visa) at a Japanese embassy or consulate before traveling. The visa-free arrangement is strictly for short stays.
No, if you stay airside and don't pass through immigration, you don't need a visa. If you plan to leave the airport or stay overnight, you'll need to meet the visa-free entry requirements.
You will likely be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry by Japanese immigration. Renew your passport before traveling.
No, it's not required by law, but it's strongly recommended. Medical costs in Japan are high — a simple hospital visit can cost hundreds of euros per day. Many travellers buy a policy from SafetyWing or similar.
Technically, the visa-free status is for tourism and short business trips. Remote work for a foreign employer is usually tolerated, but you cannot work for a Japanese company or receive payment from within Japan. If you're unsure, check with the Japanese embassy.
Report the loss immediately to the nearest police station and get a police report. Then contact the Slovenian embassy in Tokyo (or the nearest EU consulate) to apply for an emergency travel document. You'll need the police report and a passport photo.
