Thai passport holders can enter Myanmar without a visa for stays of up to 14 days. This visa-free entry is available at Yangon and Mandalay airports, and the Mae Sot–Myawaddy land border crossing. As of 2026, the rules remain unchanged, so you can plan a short trip without any visa paperwork.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your departure date from Myanmar
Your passport needs at least 6 months of remaining validity from the day you leave Myanmar. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Myanmar within 14 days
Immigration officers at Yangon and Mandalay airports routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or a ticket to your next destination showing departure within 14 days.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Officers may ask where you are staying. Have a hotel confirmation or a letter from your host ready. A simple booking printout or email on your phone works.Recommended
Proof of funds
Evidence you can support yourself during your stay
You may be asked to show you have enough money for your 14-day trip. Carry at least $200 USD in cash or a bank statement on your phone. ATMs in Myanmar are unreliable for foreign cards.Recommended
Visa-free is only 14 days — no extensions
You cannot extend the 14-day visa-free stay. If you need more time, apply for a tourist visa (e-visa or embassy) before you travel. Overstaying even one day incurs a fine.
Land border crossing at Mae Sot–Myawaddy
This is the only land border open for visa-free entry for Thai passport holders. Other land borders (e.g., Ranong–Kawthaung) require a visa. Check current border status before you go.

What happens at the border

1
Arrival at Yangon International Airport (RGN)
After deplaning, follow signs to 'Immigration' or 'Visa on Arrival' (ignore the visa counters — you're visa-free). Join the 'Foreign Passports' queue. Hand over your passport, boarding pass, and return ticket. The officer will stamp you in. Expect 5–10 minutes per person.
2
Arrival at Mandalay International Airport (MDL)
Same process as Yangon. Head straight to the immigration hall, join the foreign passport line. Have your passport, return ticket, and accommodation proof ready. Stamping is quick — usually under 5 minutes.
3
Land border crossing (e.g., Mae Sot–Myawaddy)
At the Thai side, exit Thailand. Walk across the Friendship Bridge. At Myanmar immigration, fill out the arrival card (provided at the counter). Present your passport, return ticket, and hotel booking. The officer will issue a 14-day visa-free stamp. Expect 15–30 minutes depending on queue.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free entry is not extendable. If you want to stay longer, you must apply for a tourist visa (e-visa or embassy visa) before you travel, which allows up to 28 days and can be extended once for an additional 14 days at the Immigration Office in Yangon (cost around 30,000 MMK).
Visa-free entry is available at Yangon International Airport (RGN), Mandalay International Airport (MDL), and the Mae Sot–Myawaddy land border crossing. Other airports and borders may require a visa — check before you go.
Yes. You'll be given a small white arrival/departure card on the plane or at the land border. Fill it out in black or blue ink. Keep the departure stub in your passport — you'll hand it back when you leave.
Overstay is fined at $3 USD per day (or equivalent in MMK), payable at the airport immigration office before departure. Overstays over 90 days can lead to a ban. Avoid it if possible.
Yes, but each entry resets the 14-day clock. There's no minimum gap required between visits, but immigration may question frequent back-to-back trips. For longer or repeated stays, apply for a tourist visa.
Not mandatory for visa-free entry, but strongly recommended. Medical care in Myanmar is limited and expensive for foreigners. A basic policy covering medical evacuation and hospital stays costs around $20–$50 for a 2-week trip.
You will likely be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry at immigration. Airlines are fined for carrying passengers without onward tickets. Buy a refundable ticket or a cheap bus/flight out of Myanmar before you travel.
