Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure date from Malaysia. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Malaysia
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward ticket showing you leave Malaysia within 90 days. Budget airlines flying into Kuala Lumpur are especially strict about this — have a printed or digital copy ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have your first night's hotel confirmation or a letter of invitation from your host ready. Officers at KLIA sometimes ask for this, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Carry cash or a bank statement showing at least 500 USD (or equivalent in MYR) for your stay. Immigration may ask to see this if you look under-funded or have no return ticket.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Airlines check passport validity before boarding. If your passport has less than 6 months left, you won't be allowed to fly. Check your passport's expiry date now — not the night before your flight.
Keep a digital copy of your documents
Save screenshots of your return ticket, hotel booking, and passport info page on your phone. If you lose your passport or need to prove your travel plans, these copies are invaluable.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at immigration counter
After landing at any Malaysian airport (Kuala Lumpur International, Penang, Langkawi, etc.), follow signs to 'Foreign Passports' counters. Join the queue for non-Malaysian citizens.
2
Present your documents
Hand over your passport (with at least 6 months validity and 1 blank page) and your boarding pass. The officer may ask for your return ticket and accommodation booking — have them ready on your phone or printed.
3
Get your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry and the allowed stay (up to 90 days). Check the stamp before leaving the counter. Keep the stamp visible — you'll need it when you leave.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. If you have nothing to declare, use the green channel. Exit into the arrivals hall.
