Turkish passport holders need an approved ETA before flying to Australia. It's an online authorization, not a visa sticker. From 2026, the ETA is valid for 12 months and allows multiple stays up to 3 months each.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa (ETA) applicationETA (Australia): Electronic Travel Authority — a digital visa linked to your passport. Required for all eligible passport holders. Apply via the Australian ETA app ($20 AUD fee) before travel.
Electronic Travel Authority (subclass 601)
You need an ETA before boarding. Apply through the official Australian ETA app (free to download, $20 AUD fee) — third-party websites charge extra. Approval usually comes within seconds, but apply at least 48 hours before departure.Apply for ETARequired
Valid passport
Must cover entire stay
Your Turkish passport must be valid for the full duration of your stay in Australia. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires before you leave, you'll be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket out of Australia. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking ready — they check this at the border.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel or host booking
Have your hotel reservation or host's address handy. Officers may ask where you're staying, especially if you're a first-time visitor. A simple booking confirmation email works.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient money for your stay
Carry evidence of funds — bank statements, credit card limit, or cash. There's no fixed amount, but you should be able to cover accommodation, food, and transport for your trip.Recommended
Apply for ETA early
Don't wait until the last minute. While most ETAs are approved instantly, some take hours. If you apply at the airport and it's delayed, you could miss your flight. Apply at least 48 hours before departure.
SmartGate saves time
At major Australian airports, use the SmartGate kiosk instead of the manual queue. It's faster and easier. Just scan your passport, answer a few questions, and you're through.
Declare everything at customs
Australia has some of the strictest biosecurity laws in the world. If you bring in food, plants, or animal products without declaring them, you can face fines up to AUD 4,000 or even prosecution. When in doubt, declare it.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for your ETA online
Go to the Australian Department of Home Affairs website or download the Australian ETA app. Fill in your passport details, personal info, and travel plans. Pay the fee (around AUD 20). You'll get an email confirmation. Approval is usually instant but can take up to 12 hours.
2
Pack your documents
Print or save on your phone: your ETA approval email, passport, return ticket, first night accommodation booking, and travel insurance certificate. Keep them together in a folder or a notes app.
3
Arrive at the airport in Turkey
Check in for your flight. The airline will verify your ETA is approved. If not, they may deny boarding. Show your passport and ETA confirmation at the check-in counter.
4
Go through Australian immigration
When you land in Australia (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, etc.), follow signs to 'Arrivals' or 'Immigration'. Use the SmartGate kiosk if eligible (Turkish passports are usually accepted). Scan your passport, answer a few questions on screen, and get a ticket. Hand it to the officer. They may ask about your stay, return ticket, and accommodation. Answer honestly.
5
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, pick up your bags from the carousel. Then proceed through customs. Declare any food, plant material, or animal products. Australia has strict biosecurity laws. If you're unsure, declare it.
