Visa on arrival
Visa on arrival
Get your visa on arrival at Egyptian airports and land borders. Pay in cash (USD, EUR, or GBP) — single entry costs $25 USD, multiple entry costs $60 USD. Have a passport photo ready, though they rarely ask for one.Apply onlineRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date
Egypt enforces the 6-month passport validity rule strictly. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding. No exceptions.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for visa on arrival
Immigration officers at Cairo and Hurghada airports routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return or onward ticket ready. Without one, you may be refused the visa on arrival.Required
Proof of accommodation
Recommended
Immigration may ask for your hotel booking or host's address. Have a printed confirmation or a digital copy on your phone. If you are staying with friends, have their contact details and address written down.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended
Officers rarely ask, but having $1,000 USD or equivalent in cash or a bank statement showing sufficient funds covers you. ATMs are widely available in cities, but carry some cash for the visa fee.Recommended
Cash only — no cards accepted
The visa on arrival counter only takes cash in US dollars. Have $25 USD in exact change ready. If you pay with a larger bill, you'll likely get change in Egyptian pounds at an unfavorable rate.
Visa on arrival is for tourism only
This visa is for tourism purposes. If you're traveling for work, study, or long-term stay, you need to apply for the appropriate visa at an Egyptian embassy before you travel.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at the visa on arrival counter
After landing at Cairo International Airport (or Hurghada, Sharm el-Sheikh, Luxor), follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival' or 'Bank' before passport control. There's a dedicated counter where you pay the fee.
2
Pay the fee and get your visa sticker
Hand over $25 USD (exact change) to the officer. They'll give you a visa sticker. Some airports also have ATMs nearby if you need local currency, but the visa fee must be in USD.
3
Affix the sticker to your passport
Peel the sticker and place it on a blank page in your passport. Do not cover any existing stamps or pages. The officer at passport control will validate it.
4
Proceed to passport control
Join the queue for passport control. Have your passport (with visa sticker), return ticket, and accommodation confirmation ready. The officer may ask a few questions (purpose of visit, length of stay). Answer clearly.
5
Collect your luggage and exit
After your passport is stamped, collect your bags from baggage claim and proceed through customs. You're now legally in Egypt.
