What happens at the border

1
Complete the online application
Go to GOV.UK and fill out the Standard Visitor visa application. You'll need to create an account, answer questions about your trip, and pay the fee. Save your application reference number.
2
Book and attend biometric appointment
After submitting the online form, book an appointment at a UK Visa Application Centre (e.g., in Kyiv). Bring your passport, appointment confirmation, and any required documents. At the appointment, you'll give fingerprints and a photo.
3
Submit your documents
Upload your supporting documents to the online portal or bring them to the VAC (depending on the service you chose). Ensure all documents are in English or translated by a certified translator.
4
Wait for a decision
Processing typically takes 3 weeks from the date of your biometric appointment. You can track your application online. Some applications may take longer if additional checks are needed.
5
Receive your passport and visa
Once approved, your passport will be returned with a visa vignette (sticker) valid for 6 months. Check the dates and details on the vignette immediately. If anything is wrong, contact the VAC.
6
Travel to the UK
Arrive at a UK port (e.g., Heathrow, Gatwick, or Eurostar). At border control, present your passport with the visa. You may be asked questions about your trip. Have your supporting documents handy.

Transiting through United Kingdom

No transit visa needed

Ukrainian citizens do not need a visa to transit through the UK airside (without passing border control) if they have a confirmed onward ticket and stay within the airport transit area. However, if you need to pass through UK border control (e.g., to change airports or stay overnight), you must apply for a Visitor in Transit visa.

Airside transitAllowed up to 24h
Exceptions & conditions
  • If you have a valid UK visitor visa, you can transit without a separate transit visa.
  • If you are a lawful permanent resident of certain countries (e.g., USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, EU/EEA), you may be exempt from the transit visa requirement even when passing border control.
  • If you hold a valid visa for the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, or an EU/EEA country, you may be eligible for the 'transit without visa' concession when passing through border control, subject to conditions.
