Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in Iceland. Schengen rules don't require 6 months beyond departure, but your airline might — check with them before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen area
Immigration officers at Keflavík will ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Budget airlines check this before boarding too.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have your hotel confirmation or host's address ready. Officers occasionally ask for it, especially if you're arriving without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Carry a bank statement or credit card showing you have enough for your stay. There's no fixed minimum, but around 10,000 ISK per day is a safe benchmark.Recommended
Schengen 90/180-day rule
Your 90-day visa-free stay applies to the entire Schengen Area, not just Iceland. If you've already spent 30 days in France, you only have 60 days left for Iceland and the rest of Schengen. Track your days carefully.
No visa needed, but be prepared
Even though you don't need a visa, border officers can still deny entry if they're not satisfied with your purpose of visit, funds, or onward travel. Have your documents ready and be honest about your plans.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Keflavík Airport
You'll land at Keflavík International Airport (KEF), the main entry point. Follow signs to 'Passport Control' — it's a single queue for all non-Schengen arrivals.
2
Present your passport and documents
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask about your trip purpose, length of stay, and accommodation. Have your return ticket and hotel booking ready on your phone or printed.
3
Get your entry stamp
The officer stamps your passport with the entry date. This starts your 90-day Schengen clock. Check the stamp before walking away — if it's smudged or missing, ask for a clear one.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, head to baggage claim, then customs. There's usually no customs declaration for personal items. Exit into the arrivals hall.

Frequently asked questions

No. Visa-free entry is for tourism, business meetings, and family visits only. You cannot take paid employment or freelance work for Icelandic clients. For work, you need a residence permit.
Up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This is the Schengen-wide limit. If you've already spent time in other Schengen countries (e.g., Germany, France), that counts toward your 90 days.
No. Visa-free stays cannot be extended in Iceland. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a residence permit before your 90 days expire — and you'll likely need to leave and re-enter from outside Schengen.
No. Ukrainian passport holders do not need a transit visa for Iceland, even if you're connecting to a non-Schengen destination. You'll go through passport control at Keflavík.
You must have a valid passport for the entire stay. If it expires, contact the Ukrainian embassy in Oslo (covers Iceland) for an emergency travel document. You cannot leave Iceland with an expired passport.
No. For stays under 90 days, no registration is required. If you stay longer (with a permit), you must register with Registers Iceland (Þjóðskrá) within 7 days.
Overstaying is a violation of Schengen rules. You may be fined, banned from re-entering Schengen for up to 5 years, and face deportation. Always leave before your 90 days are up.
