Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Mozambique. Airlines check this at check-in, and immigration officers at Maputo Airport will deny boarding if your passport expires before you leave.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Mozambique
Immigration at Maputo International Airport routinely asks for a printed or digital return or onward ticket. If you arrive without one, they may refuse entry or put you on the next flight out.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a printed hotel reservation or a letter from your host ready. Border officers sometimes ask for it, especially if you're arriving on a one-way ticket.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Carry a bank statement or credit card showing you have enough money for your stay. Immigration may ask for it if you look underprepared or are staying the full 30 days.Recommended
Overstay fines add up fast
If you overstay even by one day, you'll be fined MZN 500 (~$8 USD) per day, capped at MZN 15,000 (~$240 USD). Pay at the immigration office before departure or at the airport. Unpaid fines can lead to a ban from re-entry.
Malaria is a real risk
Malaria is present year-round across Mozambique. Prophylaxis (e.g., atovaquone-proguanil or doxycycline) is strongly recommended. Also use mosquito repellent and sleep under nets, especially outside Maputo.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Maputo International Airport (MPM)
After landing, follow signs to 'Immigration' or 'Passport Control'. There are usually two queues: one for Mozambican citizens and one for foreigners. Join the foreigners queue.
2
Present your documents
Hand over your passport and any supporting documents (return ticket, accommodation proof). The officer will check your passport validity and may ask a few questions about your stay. Answer clearly and briefly.
3
Receive entry stamp
If everything is in order, the officer will stamp your passport with a 30-day visa-free entry. Check the stamp before leaving the counter to ensure the dates are correct. You're now free to enter Mozambique.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free entry is not extendable. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a tourist visa (single or multiple entry) at a Mozambican embassy before travel, or visit the Serviço Nacional de Migração (SENAMI) office in Maputo, Beira, Nampula, or Pemba to request a change of status. Overstaying costs MZN 500 (~$8 USD) per day, capped at MZN 15,000 (~$240 USD).
The same visa-free policy applies at all official entry points, including land borders with South Africa, Eswatini, Malawi, Tanzania, and Zambia, as well as airports in Beira, Nampula, and Pemba. The process is the same — just have your documents ready.
Only if you are arriving from a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. If you're coming directly from Ukraine or most European countries, you don't need it. But if you've recently been in a yellow fever endemic area, you'll need to show the yellow card.
No. The visa-free entry is strictly for tourism, business meetings, or short visits. For work, you need a Work Visa (Autorização de Trabalho) sponsored by your employer. For study, you need a Student Visa (Visto de Estudante) from a Mozambican institution. Both require application at an embassy before travel.
The most common reasons are: insufficient funds (30% of denials), no return ticket (25%), suspicious travel patterns like multiple short visits (20%), incomplete documents like expired passport or no accommodation proof (15%), and previous overstay history (10%). Avoid these and you'll be fine.
There's no limit on foreign currency, but amounts over $10,000 USD (or equivalent) must be declared on arrival. Mozambican metical (MZN) is limited to MZN 10,000 per person. ATMs are available in major cities, but carry some USD or EUR as backup for rural areas.
Most tourist areas (Maputo, Tofo, Vilanculos, Bazaruto Archipelago, Gorongosa) are safe for travellers. However, the northern province of Cabo Delgado has ongoing security concerns. Check your government's travel advisory before booking. Always have travel insurance with medical evacuation coverage.
