Ugandan passport holders need a visa to enter France in 2026. You must apply at the French embassy in Kampala before you travel — there is no visa-on-arrival or e-visa option. Plan ahead: processing can take several weeks, so start at least 6–8 weeks before your trip.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Schengen visa application
Apply before travel
You need a short-stay Schengen visa to enter France. Apply at the French embassy or consulate in Uganda, or through the France-Visas portal. Processing takes at least 15 calendar days — apply 3–6 months before your trip.Apply for Schengen visaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for entire stay
Your passport must be valid for the full duration of your stay in France. Schengen rules do not require 6 months beyond departure, but airlines often enforce it — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Border officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket out of the Schengen area. Have a printed or digital copy ready — airlines at Entebbe may also check this before boarding.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation, rental agreement, or a signed letter from your host in France. Officers rarely ask, but if they do, you need a document showing where you're staying each night.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have bank statements, a credit card, or cash showing at least €65 per day of your stay. Officers may ask how you'll fund your trip — a recent statement from your Ugandan bank works fine.Recommended
Apply early — slots fill fast
The French embassy in Kampala has limited appointment slots, especially during summer and Christmas. Book your appointment at least 6–8 weeks before your planned departure. Do not buy non-refundable flights until your visa is approved.
Schengen visa rules apply
With a French visa, you can visit all 27 Schengen countries for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. But you must enter France first or spend the most time there — otherwise your visa may be questioned at the border.

What happens at the border

1
Complete the online application
Go to France-Visas.gouv.fr, create an account, fill in the Schengen visa form, and print the final summary. You'll need your passport details, travel dates, and accommodation info handy.
2
Book an appointment at the French embassy in Kampala
After submitting online, you must book an in-person appointment through the embassy's booking system. Slots fill up fast — book at least 3–4 weeks before your planned travel. Bring all your documents printed and organised.
3
Attend the visa interview
Show up at the embassy on time with your printed application, passport, photos, flight itinerary, hotel bookings, bank statements, insurance certificate, and visa fee. They may ask about your trip plans and ties to Uganda. Biometrics (fingerprints and photo) are taken on the spot.
4
Wait for processing
Standard processing takes 15 calendar days, but can stretch to 30–45 days during peak season (summer, Christmas). You'll get a message when your passport is ready for collection. Do not book non-refundable flights until you have the visa in hand.
5
Arrive in France and go through immigration
At the airport (CDG, Orly, Nice, etc.), join the 'All Passports' queue. Have your passport with visa, return ticket, and accommodation proof ready. The officer may ask simple questions like 'How long are you staying?' or 'Where will you be staying?' Answer calmly. They'll stamp your passport — that stamp shows your allowed stay.
